Hangover game of the century thus far? That’s what we are about to find out. Today’s tip-off temp in The Capital City of Latin America is set for 70 degrees – but wait, 54 is the call for Chapel Hill at 7 pm today. “Mother Nature: You can’t fit all four seasons into one week. North Carolina: Hold my biscuit.” Weather aside, Carolina's task is a tall one tonight in rolling into the Sunshine State to take on 18-5 Miami (7-3). The Hurricanes are tied with Carolina for 4th place in the ACC standings and cannot afford to let up on the gas tonight. Miami is led by Malik Reneau (6-9 Sr.,Indiana, 20ppg 6.5rpg) who scores from the FT-line in mostly but is versatile and a tough stop. Senior Tre Donaldson leads the team (#3,Aub, Mich, 6-3, 16ppg, 6apg, 35% 3pt) and does it well. In the post Ernest Udeh at 6-11 anchors the defense (Kansas, TCU, 7ppg, 10rpg) while promising frosh Shelton Henderson (#7, 6-6) scores at a 14 ppg clip while grabbing almost 5 rebounds. Another freshman, Dante Allen (#34, 6-4) fills the 5th starter spot with 6ppg. Tru Washington appears to be out indefinitely which moves soph Marcus Allen (#0, 6-7 5.3ppg, 38% 3pt) and ancient Noam Dovrat (Israel, 24 years old, 6-4, 3.2ppg 40% 3pt) up in the rotation. Slovakian Timotej Malovec (#88, 6-8 5.2ppg, 36% 3pt) and Turkish Salith Altunas (#11, 6-10, 2ppg, 2.5rpg) do duty in the paint. The coach is young Jai Lucas, son of former Derm and Maryland great John Lucas. Worse yet, Lucas has worked as an assistant to Rick Barnes, John Calipari, and at dook for Scheyerface. He’ll be getting all types of spite advice moving into this southern battle.
Frontcourt: Veesaar of the Three Pointer and Second Half look solid across the board while both Wilson and Stevenson’s arcs are low (though Caleb has a soaring Emotion mark – the greats turn whatever they have to their advantage so watch there). High has good looks.
Wings: Bogavac is below the fold but Powell looks to be a spark.
Guards: Trimble is solid while Dixon and Young are smart guys. Kyan Evans brings heart to the court.
Overall: The Hurricanes are an NCAA bound squad and anchor around the inside defense of Udeh, around the paint scoring of Reneau, and the playmaking of Donaldson. Henderson picks up the pieces and role-players fill out the roster. They do tend to out-rebound their foes and clean the defensive boards well. They are essentially a 4-man team with, so far, no great help off of the bench. They also have not shown great accuracy from deep – they take less than 7 threes per game and do not shoot free throws well. This one may be a grind for the first 30 minutes and freshness in the line-up will likely be important. Carolina has greater depth and good minutes from men like Bogavac, Young, and especially Powell and Evans will be key. High may see minutes too.
Miami is favored in this home game by the gamblers (by 1.5). It does look like trouble. Veesaar, adrenalin from Trimble, and a lift from Powell can spell a Carolina Victory but 2 so hang on.
