Up to University Hill go the banged up Tar Heels. Caleb Wilson is out and Henri Veesaar is “questionable” but almost certainly also out. Other Heels who played less are also out: James Brown (6-9) and Ivan Matlekovic (7-0). Back on Feb. 2 – so very loooong ago, Carolina prepped up for the home win over dook by taking one from The Orange by ten in the Dean E. Smith Center. That win was demoralizing for many because it didn’t “look good.” I’ll take another ugly win today and absolutely love it. Since that early February loss to Carolina Syracuse has lost to UVA by 13, beat Cal at home in two overtimes, beat SMU by one at home, and lost convincingly to dook in the Tool Box. In the interim Carolina has beat dook, lost to Miami, beat Pitt, and took it on the chin in Raleighwood. In the Miami game Caleb Wilson suffered a hand injury that has sidelined him while Seven-Foot Center Henri Veesaar has also not played in the interim, brought down by flu and a reported ACL strain of some sort. A depleted Carolina shot atrociously against state college and lost to the smiling, laughing, taunting wolpfackers. The winter-wearied Orange likely think they smell blood in the snow and should come out hunting for the kill.
Frontcourt: High is middlin. Stevenson is afire. Powell isn’t physical but he’s fired up and smart.
Wings: Bogavac has his best biorhythms of the season. Jaydon Young is athletic.
Guards: Trimble is smart. Kyan Evans is smart, fast, and driven. Derek Dixon is physical and fired up.
Overall: The Orange’s inside man Donnie Freeman is 6-9 and average 17 ppg and 7 rebounds. Syracuse will look, as will everyone, to take it to the rim against the pivot depleted Heels. High and Stevenson with some help from Powell form the UNC front line at present and foul trouble to any of them will further shrink Carolina. Bogavac and Dixon are big guards and must play like it today. Carolina will need the tenacity to rebound that Jonathan Powell has shown at times. Seth Trimble plays above his stature and has to today as well. Orange Freeman will be joined by William Kyle (#42 6-9 10ppg, 7.5rpg) in the effort to bully in the paint. He is capable. J.J. Starling has been slumbering most of the season and coming off of a sad outing versus the blue devils. He averages 12 point per game and has had his moments over the years (<-- We don’t say that often anymore, do we, so short do player’s stays tend to be in these times). Nate George and Nate Kingz are double figure scorers who will shoot Treys with some accuracy. They’re guards. Kingz goes 6-5. Two auxiliary bigs come off the Syracuse bench: Ibrahim Soares (6-9, So) has been getting more minutes of late, grabbing 7 rebounds against dook. Freshman Sadiq White (6-9) will be another tall body to throw at High and Stevenson as well.
Despite the talk of inside play there’s a good chance that the fortunes of Carolina rest on the shoulders of Trimble, Bogavac, Dixon, and Evans today as they go against Kingz, George, and Starling. Ritmos are close but point to the Tar Heels in that category. Bogavac is from the northern part of Montenegro, Mojkovac to be exact, and it is cold there. Here’s hoping that he feels at home in the frozen northern reaches of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Trimble is also from cold country, Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. Here’s to these two men heating things up today in snowy Syracuse. Don’t sleep on Kyan Evans – his rhythms are gangbusters. Ready to see some athleticism from Jaydon Young as well. Hey, and Powell is very smart today. Chathamite Jarin Stevenson is, however, The Man today. Carolina is favored by 1.5 (whatever that Point Five means). Ritmos point to a five point victory.
