Coach Michael Schwartz

The third UNC System School on Carolina’s schedule this season (WSSU [4-5], NC Central [4-10]), ECU [5-7] joins their sister schools in being nigh onto zero threat to Carolina. The woes of the lower to mid-major schools are evident in those squads filled with journeymen and hope-filled junior college emergeants. ECU has two players of note in senior (third school) New Yorker #12 Jordan Riley who plays a tough mid-range game, producing 21.7 ppg and leading the Pirates in rebounding at 6-5 grabbing 5.4 caroms a game. Englishman Giovanni Emejuru is in the pivot at 6-10 after stints at Sam Houston, Siena, and George Mason and has respectable numbers at 13.8 and 9.2. His future in the Super League of England and Scotland is secure for sure. After that Winston-Salem’s Tybo Bailey scores 9 ppg from the backcourt. The Downeasterners have wins over Georgia Southern, Elizabeth City State, U of Maryland Eastern Shore, Buffalo, and Presbyterian. This game will add nothing to the Tar Heel resumé. Coach Michael Schwartz is a Rick Barnes scion and that is the biggest reason to crush this squad…though anyone recollecting East Carolina’s Pat Dye might find other motivations.

Frontcourt: Caleb Wilson is smart while Veesaar, Brown, and High are all athletic.

Wings: Stevenson has good motivational arcs while Bogavac has good marks across the board (time for him to emerge from the funk) and Powell is a solid middlin’ look.

Guards: Evans has the most fire on the team while Trimble is physical but even-tempered. Dixon is level and Young bottomed out.

Overall: ECU scores 68 points per game, shoots 41% from the field overall, and 26% from Three. They hit at 71% from the charity stripe and average 14 turnovers. It is hard to say much positive about this match-up. The Heels need to leave this court this evening healthy. It is eight days hence before they take on the 6-6 Florida State Seminoles in Chapel Hill. It is difficult not to look ahead to the holiday (what will our men from so very far away – Croatia, Montenegro, Estonia, Minnesota do? With 6 native Tar Heels on the team one hopes that homes are open to the migrants and the time will be happy for all). The Gamblers call this one a 27.5 win for the University of North Carolina. The Biorhythms have no quibble with that but would, in the spirit of Pat Dye, appreciate just a bit more if at all possible.

Many in my experience were Carolina fans through high school - then stopped pulling for The Heels.

I taught at ECU and went to ASU. I didn’t encounter nearly as many Carolina Haters up in the mountains as I did Down East.
Yeah, most of the folks I know from the mountains are UNC fans. Most folks I know from ENC hate UNC if they have no connections to the school (my dad is from ENC but in addition to being a UNC alum, he is from a family of UNC alums, so he was in the minority).

My experience with folks from ENC is that they view UNC as the school where the most privileged kids they went high school with would go. A lot of them are State fans but a number of them are Duke fans.

My freshman year — three of my buddies and my girlfriend all applied to UNC and were turned down. They all then went to ECU. All had been Carolina fans. By the end of that fall semester that were all haters.

They all came up for that 12-10 Carolina Victory. I cheered. They cried. My girlfriend and I broke up.

It was a great weekend.

I went to the game at Clemson that year. My parents were from Anderson and Spartanburg. My mom’s family was huge and they all pulled for Clemson. I was sitting with my uncle at the game. Mike Voight broke off about an 85 yard touchdown run. I was standing up cheering. People were throwing ice, peanuts and popcorn at me. My uncle told me to sit down before someone threw a liquor bottle.

I went to q few ECU football games that year before my GF and I broke up...there were always liquor bottles being thrown in the stands. Lots of fights too. And then "downtown" post game as well.

In other views...keep an eye on this Riley guy tonight...6-5 and averaging over 21 ppg.
That's in 36 minutes a game and 31% from three. Judging from what they're averaging a game, he's their offense. I expect Trimble might make it a long night for him.

Closet I ever came to getting arrested was after an ECU football game for drunk and disorderly conduct. The only thing that saved me was a fight broke out about half a block down the street and the police let me go with a warning to get off the street. I did.
