Michigan State is ranked and good. And big. And as with all of Tom Izzo’s teams they play defense with gusto. Carolina is 13-5 in games since the first match-up in the NCAA semifinals of 1957. That was a three overtime win with MSU led by “Jumping” Johnny Green. Of course, Carolina went on to defeat Kansas and Wilt Chamberlain in the next game to cap a 34-0 season and take the National Championship. In more recent years, the Tom Izzo Era at Michigan State, UNC is 6-4 against the Spartans (dating back to 1999). That said, the Spartans took the last tilt at the Maui Classic in overtime by 94-91. Our common history is, thus, quite rich. (We also beat them in the NCAA finals in 2009).
The Spartans bring a tall duo in sharpshooter #00 Jaxon Kohler (6-10, 14ppg, 10rpg, 40% 3fg) and #15 Carson Cooper (6-11, 12ppg, 5rpg, 67% fg) – #55 Coen Carr rounds out the frontcourt and plays much bigger than his 6-6 frame (12ppg). Super-frosh #3 Cam Ward is off the bench for 9ppg and 6rpg. He’s 6-8 and runs the court. All of these Bigs are mobile with Kohler being a footwork master in the paint. The backcourt is a handful too with #1 Jeremy Fears dishing for 10 assists a game and only 2 turnovers. He scores at 11ppg too. Journeyman (the only true one on this team) Trey Fort brings experience, good on the ball defense, and streaky shooting to the backcourt and he is spelled by #99 Divine Oguchukwu (5ppg). Kur Tent is a wild card freshman. At 6-6 he plays the wing and can down the three. Izzo has crafted a good crew here with men who has stuck with him in Seniors Kohler, Cooper, and Junior Carr – Fears is a soph and the rest are newcomers the traditional way – they’re freshmen. This squad started off the year in a long distance drought but has found their range of late and frankly, play an all-around game – averaging 80 points and giving up 61, outrebounding their foes 43 to 30, and shooting at a 46% clip while holding opponents to 39%. This hard-nosed team has Izzo writ all over it.
Frontcourt: Veesaar carries his athleticism into this one while Caleb Wilson is a Mensa Man. Jarid Stevenson is also strong and very fired up. High is super-physical and Brown joins him.
Wings: Bogavac got some great arcs but Jonathan Powell continues to struggle with the rhythms. Wilson and Stevenson will play on the wings as well.
Guards: Kyan Evans is all above the fold and back-up Derek Dixon has the best overall biorhythms on the team. Jaydon Young is a very smart man.
Overall: This is a tough one and it looks like The Spartans have a slight advantage. In contrast, that topped out Intel Mark for Caleb Wilson looks important. He learned from the treatment he was given by The Bonnies. There is good physicality among the Tar Heels for this day-before-Thanksgiving afternoon contest. The Bettors say MSU by 2.5 – Ritmos look like a toss-up with a lean toward Michigan State. Yet…History is on the side of Carolina. Play smarter than the arcs and we’ll say Carolina by 2.
Happy Holiday!! Vayamos Heels!!!
