Biorhythms for UNC v Navy, 7 pm in The Dean E. Smith Center

Even that team had some tighter-than-expected early wins against teams like Penn (15 points), UC Santa Barbara (17 points), Oral Roberts (16 points), and Evansville (18 points), and went 0-2 to start ACC play, including a home loss to unranked BC.

Yes...and even that powerhouse.

Looking ahead, not sure I feel too confident about the Michigan State game next week without Trimble. I watched a decent amount of their game against UK last night and they were clearly the better all around side. I also worry that playing that in a tiny gym with a weak crowd will work to our detriment since we tend to come out flat anyway.

Think we have to find away to go at least 2-2 against the remaining power conference teams on our non-conference slate.

The good news is it’s Michigan State. 90% of the time we beat them 95% of the time. And they’ve won 2 of the last 3, so I think they’ve exhausted their mojo against us.

I’ve watched Mich St twice now against Arkansas and Kentucky and they are tough

They want to play a lot through their bigs so how Veesaar and Wilson hang in the post defensively will be key

Don’t be fooled by how well they shot the ball last night against an out of sorts Kentucky defense

I’d have said 50/50 game or slight edge UNC with Seth in the lineup but definite edge to MSU without

High is much worse than expected. And I didn’t expect much. Legitimately not sure why he’s still on the team

With Seth it’s a strong 6 that I think is up there with many of the best teams this season

But huuuge drop at 7-9. Little room for error/additional injuries going forward. Veesaaar need as many mins as he can play
I don’t think there is a huge drop until 9. Powell and Dixon are very solid bench pieces - especially when not paired with High.

That said, Powell/Dixon will likely be down to 10 minutes or less by March. Hubert has demonstrated that he likes to play his starters 35 minutes.

Wilson and Veesar need to work on not picking up cheap fouls. We can’t afford for either to get a second foul in the first half in a big game.

The only reason I can see why is on the team is because Brown isn't any better. High and Brown are both really just players that are tall that they can plug in tonhave height if Vaaseer or Stevensen are out now. I doubt they will have any time when Trimble returns unless Vaaseer or Stevensen get into foul trouble. I agree about the drop off after the first 6. Really only see Stevensen coming off the bench for Vaaseer and Wilson, and those being the three rotating bigs. Powell, Dixon and Young can sub for 1-3 with Powell and Dixon getting the majority of the time. But really only 6 deep when Trimble comes back. Maybe someone else will step up and contribute more before he gets back. Would be nice to have some help from the bench.

I don't see a lot for either High or Brown. Otoh, they are only sophomores and are the very type player who will maintain program continuity if they mature and have good senior years for us. We need some players that do that.

Dean was of the opinion that, as a whole, bigger players took longer to mature. I think I've heard that high also went through a late and rapid growth spurt. I know they and some others don't look like much now but we have to think about how important it is to have a core of the lunch pail guys.

Yeah, maybe that phrasing is a bit unfair to those two. I think they can look good in regular lineups and eventually be trusted in big games. The shooting from both is certainly a plus

Issue with Powell is he plays the most crowded position on the roster and isn't adding playmaking/ball handling. Dixon you'd hope would provide some of that but hasn't shown much of it either. Still very early of course

I think Powell's position will become a little less crowded once Stevenson starts manning most of the 4 & 5 backup minutes. If you gave Stevenson 5 minutes at the 4, 5 minutes at the 5, and 15 minutes at the 3, that would leave 25 extra 3 minutes to share between Luka and Powell. Luka could take 15 at the 3 and 10 at the 2. Powell could then take 10 minutes at the 3.

I've now had a chance to catch last night's game.

Some of it seems to have a collective off night by the team. Those happens and it's important not to overreact to that.

But there also seems to be some general problems that extend further than this game.

Caleb is the straw that stirs the drink. When he's off the court, we aren't nearly the same team. And we haven't seen what it's like when he has an off game. We've got to find a way to continue to play well whenever he's either not on the court or perhaps not his usual self.

We also seem to bog down a bit in the half court, especially when Caleb's not on the court. We really do miss having a pass-first PG to set up the offense and get other guys good looks. We've got to scheme a way get some easier baskets in the half court offense.

And we still seem to have periods where we stall out on both ends of the court. Some of that is that it's fairly early in the season and we're playing a long bench, but we've got to work out how to reduce these lapses in focus/quality play.

This team has the potential to be very, very good, but there are definitely opportunities for growth as the season goes on.
