The Fort Myers Tip-Off is staged on the Ft. Myers campus of Florida SouthWestern State College in the Suncoast Credit Union Arena which seats 3,500. This event started up in 2018 and while working to replicate the environment of a tournament is not really one. Eight teams do converge there and over several days during the Thanksgiving Holiday they play games. The Florida location inside US borders may have been favorable in these times for such competitions - a quick count of rosters of the eight teams involved showed at least 20 foreign-born players (Carolina starts a Montenegrin and an Estonian).

St. Bonaventure, much like UNC, returns two from last year’s team (starting point Desonte Bowen is the only one to see playing time thus far) and have brought in 13 newcomers of which 5 are foreign. Big forward Canadian Frank Mitchell is a force in the paint (16ppg, 10rpg - MN) while water bug guard 5-11 Daryl Simmons goes for 18ppg and heats up quickly (Gardner-Webb). In the paint Fullerton College transfer Joe Grahovac blocks shots and rebounds. So far The Bonnies are scoring well.

Frontcourt: Ritmos here are patchy. Veesaar brings good physical and nada mas. Brown and High also are 50 or higher in their athletic marks. Wilson and Stevenson’s biorhythmic fortunes raise considerablyTar Heel inside presence.

Wings: Bogavac is physical and fired up while Jonathan Powell is in the doldrums. Add in Wilson and Stevenson on the wings, where they will both likely play minutes, and this angle of approach improves.

Guards: Kyan Evans has the best arcs on the team. Jaydon Young looks smart. Again, the interchangeability of this squad position-wise makes such traditional categorization a bit antiquated. Team rhythms are quite good across the board though there are some downcycles.

Overall: Noted above, there are good Biorhythms in the main for the team though traditional center numbers are spotty. The Bonnies have shown a penchant for run and shoot…and against Bradley, Canisius, Youngstown State, Siena, and Robert Morris they have shot 49% from the field (38% from three) and scored at a 78ppg clip. Simmons is a motor and Mitchell is a yeoman inside. Coach Mark Schmidt has a good program that consistently wins 19-20 games a year (22-12 last year). Like everyone he is working to adapt to the Wild West atmosphere of transfer, NIL, and the portal – he’s chosen to go abroad, bringing in five foreign players this season (ironic ain’t it that so many colleges and universities are turning to immigrant players at this point in US history when foreign students are increasingly shunned) though only one has earned significant playing time so far (Mitchell). Another sidebar point is what has so far been what seems to be a reluctance for players to provide their birthdates – this is a new development even from last year. Birthdays for only two St. Bonaventure players were readily available. We’ll see how that goes moving forward.

Today, for the 6pm Eastern Standard Time tip-off the Tar Heels are favored by 10.5 by the prognosticators out west. It is much more difficult for the Biorhythms to propose a spread without the full complement of arcs. Ten points seems like a good call – but here’s to banking on a team meeting and a super-sharp Kyan Evans and high-flying from Wilson, Bogavac, and off-the-bench freshman guard Dixon to spark the Heels to a 15 to 20 point win. Jarin Stevenson could be the difference maker for that margin.
