The Hokies are a cornered squad. At 18-10 a big win (or three) could get them into the tournament. They bring that sentiment into the Dean E. Smith Center tonight. What’s a Hokie anyway? Students chose the name back in 1896 because the word appeared in a cheer: Hokie, Hokie, Hokie, Hy! Tech, Tech, VPI, Sol-a-rex, Sol-a-rah, Poly Tech Vir-gin-ia, Ray rah VPI, Team! Team! Team! The word officially means “Loyal Tech Fan.” Pretty stupid, eh. That said, the best mascots tend to have obscure and localized origins. Rameses was created in a similar way – who was Jack Merritt, the “battering ram” from which Rameses is drawn? Do you know? The Hokie has also come to be identified with a Turkey though Tech has tried to veer away from that imagery. No such luck Hokies. So I’ll take a RAM over a Turkey any day and tonight as well.
The Hokie headman Mike Young is a good coach and this is a squad that can be dangerous. They have wins over Virginia and Clemson, both NCAA tourney bound, so they have shown themselves potentially formidable. Carolina has shown itself capable of a flat play as well. The Ritmos do not seem to show that kind of a convergence.
Frontcourt: Veesaar is strong, Stevenson is level, and High is athletic. Not a great deal of savvy among them unfortunately.
Wings: Bogavac has great physical and intel numbers while Powell is fire. Young also brings ‘want-to’ to the court.
Guards: Trimble is athletic, Evans is a smart man, and Dixon is climbing from the biorhythmic depths that he plumbed for the past couple of weeks and sporting good P and E arcs.
Overall: The Hokies have five double figure scorers starting: 6-8 #13, Amani Hansberry gets 14ppg and grabs 8 rebounds – Super frosh Grecian Neoklis Avdalas (#17) scores at 13ppg and passes for almost 5 assists per game – he plays like a 6-9 guard – Tobi Lawal (#1) — F, 6-8 goes for 12 points and 9 rebounds and is a dangerous force in the paint – Bedford (6-4 11ppg, 35% 3pt) and Hammond (5-11, 13ppg, 43%) are their distance threats and constitute the traditional guard corps. The match-ups are wonky to be sure. Their bulk comes by way of Christian Gurdak (6-10, 6ppg and 5rpg) and 7-foot German freshman Antonio Dorm (2.7ppg, 1.7rpg). Young is a cagey guy and more prone to gimmicks than most so keep an eye on line-ups and surprises. The bench for Tech has some good arcs…Pasha is sky high and Shutt's are tough.
Carolina must not let up – Trimble’s time in Chapel Hill is shrinking and we may not see the likes of him again – the true four-year man is already rare and may not endure past this season – anywhere. Coach Davis has proclaimed that he did not want UNC to be a pit-stop program and frankly, I’d like to see him realize that. We’ll see. The pressure is on him, and has been all along. Tonight look for Trimble to bask in the #7BAFD4 Blue and shine. Veesaar says he’s 100% and he ought to show it while Derek Dixon and Kyan Evans both look to share the point with prowess. Bogavac has a good combo of Physical and Intel – He’s focused. Stevenson is steady. High is strong. The Heels are bigger than Tech, faster, and more talented – they are at home too. The Gamblers say Carolina by 6.5, the Ritmos say Carolina by 15!
