Once upon a time USC Upstate was The University of South Carolian Spartanburg thus the Spartan mascot. It was originally founded to train nurses for the region – but The Fighting Nurses just would not do. But…for something that just would not do at present…USC Spartanburg’s mascot until the name change was actually “The Rifles.” That name commemorated the Revolutionary War heritage of the Upstate – Think King’s Mountain and Cowpens. Upstate folks were guerrilla fighters of great renown. “The Rifles” actually won the 1982 NAIA Men’s Basketball National Championship. The current Spartans play in the Big South and field 15 varsity teams. One of them is not football but maybe they’ll get up a team to scrimmage with our varsity if we pay them enough?
This squad is comprised a bunch of guards, two bigs (7-1 Coen Collier and 6-9 Jafeth Martinez), and a strong but undersized power forward (6-6 Learic Davis). 6-4 wing Mason Bendinger leads the scoring (16.1) with an all-around game. He is joined in the double figures column by 6-1 Karmani Gregory (15.1) and 6-4 Carmelo Adkins (14.1). The 6-9 Martinez (of Roatan, Honduras) and the 7-1 Collier combine for 7 ppg and almost 10 rebounds. Together they have 34 blocks for an average of 3 per game which is commendable (the team goes for 5.5 bpg – Carolina gets 4.3). The Spartans also garner 7.3 steals per contest (Carolina gets 5.7). The once-Rifles force 13 turnovers a game and Carolina commits 11. The point is that these Sub Carolinians are pesky.
Frontline: Henri Veesaar is smart and fired up and Caleb Wilson fired up and physical. Jarin Stevenson has it all going for him. James Brown and Zayden High are both also Mensa Men.
Wings: Luke Bogavac emerges from end-of-semester tests with some of his best all-around biorhythms of the season so far and Jonathan Powell is part of the Intel Club (6 Heels have Intelligence Arcs of 85 or above today).
Guards: Finally Kyan Evans begins to emerge from a long couple of weeks dwelling in the bottom of the biorhythm chart – that can happen when there is a convergence of arcs – there’s an upswing in the works. Derek Dixon has the physical while Jaydon Young brings good athleticism.
Overall: Bench men need to see some good minutes today. A final box score in which Powell, Dixon, Young, Brown, and High have played 8 to 10 minutes will bode well in a multitude of ways. Getting some good minutes for Isaiah Denis would be a real treat. Most of those players have ritmos to offer. The starters plus Powell and Dixon very much need to crush the Spartans from the opening tip (which we really ought to win). To see six or seven in double figures and minutes distributed all over should be a goal. This is the Post-Exam Game and schedules have been different for a few days, routines have been disrupted, practices have been compromised and there is a tradition of coming out slack. Watch for this and hope it doesn’t happen. The gamblers say Carolina by 28.5. If they can shake the Terrible Testing Tentativeness then that could climb to 40. Vamos a ver.
