There is no indication this is due to bird flu but worth noting —-

BTW, Ding is always in alarmist mode, but a good source of info when read through that lens.

“… Although the school closures may seem concerning, experts say it’s not surprising to see during an intense wave of illness.

“Closing schools for a period of time as a way of letting the outbreak pass is something local school boards sometimes have to resort to,” says Schaffner. “It won’t eliminate a growing outbreak, but it could very well slow it down.”

“Schools close also because the adults in the school system are affected and need to take time off, so they can’t run the school,” he adds. Many schools are taking the closures as an opportunity to deep-clean facilities.

My sister’s school shut down to do a deep clean because something like 80% of students were out with the flu or Covid. Also seems to be a lot of pneumonia this year.

What is a little striking is that the places closing schools due to flu outbreaks are red states — Tennessee and Texas seem to have the most widespread issues, but closures in Oklahoma, Louisiana, Ohio, Iowa and Georgia. Virginia seems to be the Blue State outlier at the moment, but the primary issue seems to be around Rocky Mount, which is part of Red Virginia (Trump won Franklin County VA 72-27 this past election as a gauge).

It sounds like the shutdowns are mostly about rural schools that have so many staff calling in sick there are not enough substitute teachers to keep schools open.

Yeah, one of the thing I just read is that there is a quadruple whammy of four things happening at once — flu, RSV, COVID and norovirus. With flu season starting later than usual it seems to be a multi-car pileup of sorts.

A local emergency department had 30 staff out last Friday, due to noro. In December, my department of ~40 had 15 out due to it. It’s apparently one of the worst years on record. Talk about the worst 24-72 hr illness 🤮

Wash your hands and avoid all communal foods.

Yikes! Noro truly is the worst in terms of the symptoms. Just painful. Between 2013 and 2015, I got once each year. Always bad timing too. 2013 I got it the night before I was supposed to go out of town for my bachelor party weekend. 2014 I got on Thanksgiving night, which was also about 2 weeks after my son was born. 2015 I got it a few days before Christmas. The time I got it before any of those times (back in 2007), it was two nights before I was supposed to go on a trip with friends to San Francisco. Thankfully, every time I’ve had it, it’s lasted for only about 12 hours. But then you feel weak the next couple days and scared to eat anything.

Not just instructional staff but bus drivers are especially critical in rural areas. I think most states have minimum attendance policies for a day to count towards the required number of instructions days. If there’s a chance they’re going to be below that they might as well close and save some money.

My whole family has the flu right now - thankfully my husband has been unscathed so far. My parents, my kid and me...all OUT.
Fever broke last night but after walking to the kitchen and back to the bed I feel like i just biked 30 miles.

I havent had the flu since 2011, but this is as sick as I have been that I can remember....Covid included. It started Tuesday afternoon. If you start to get a tickle cough, take cover.

And yeah I get the shot every year. Didn't do a damn thing this year.

My son's class had 11 kids out on Wednesday...out of 25. And the teacher now has it too

C.D.C. Posts, Then Deletes, Data on Bird Flu Spread Between Cats and People

The data, which appeared fleetingly online on Wednesday, confirmed transmission in two households. Scientists called on the agency to release the full report.

"Cats that became infected with bird flu might have spread the virus to humans in the same household and vice versa, according to data that briefly appeared online in a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention but then abruptly vanished. The data appear to have been mistakenly posted but includes crucial information about the risks of bird flu to people and pets.

In one household, an infected cat might have spread the virus to another cat and to a human adolescent, according to a copy of the data table obtained by The New York Times. The cat died four days after symptoms began. In a second household, an infected dairy farmworker appears to have been the first to show symptoms, and a cat then became ill two days later and died on the third day.

The table was the lone mention of bird flu in a scientific report published on Wednesday that was otherwise devoted to air quality and the Los Angeles County wildfires. The table was not present in an embargoed copy of the paper shared with news media on Tuesday, and is not included in the versions currently available online. The table appeared briefly at around 1 p.m., when the paper was first posted, but it is unclear how or why the error might have occurred. ..."

CDC reduced to accidentally sharing important data, it appears.

And my fever is back. F.

K94 masks and air filters have kept it from spreading in my house. Day 5 of testing for me and my wife.

I have a little something with sore throat and fatigue. Hopefully it remains just a little something, though starting with throat soreness isn’t typically a friendly indicator for me.

Started for me Tuesday with a persistent tickle cough... Then BAM

I did walk outside today though. That was nice

FDA usually holds an advisory committee meeting in early March to recommend the strains used in the preparation of the next season’s flu vaccine.

This follows a WHO meeting in late February which reviews the latest data on circulating viruses worldwide over the previous year. The US typically follows the WHO recommendations.

Since we’ve pulled out of WHO, it’s unclear the extent of data that will be shared with the FDA advisory committee. Beyond that, the meeting hasn’t even been scheduled yet. Seasonal flu vaccine manufacturers are getting very concerned about this.
