We will. But my take.
No. 1: UNC did it to close deal. He had the leverage. Regardless we became and have remained the most talked about program in college football.
No.2: Belichick himself was unsure if this would work probably for lots of reasons. Everytime I see him interviewed he is smiling and engaging. I think he is loving UNC which should surprise no one who went there.
My prediction is he coaches 3 to 5 years, retires and lives at Governor's Club and becomes Godfather of UNC football.
I so hope you’re correct!

Having a small buyout also gives Belichick more leverage to renegotiate his salary mid contract.

I have no idea why a man his age would want to return to the NFL. He has nothing to gain. He did make the playoffs with Mac Jones as QB but for the most part his post-Brady years were horrible. He has brushed that off for now as being the fault of ownership not doing what he told them to do. Another bad run would tarnish his legacy and support the narrative that he only won because of Brady.

He will succeed here. I'm not sure whether we will just be playing in something better than the toilet bowl every year or whether we'll be a consistent playoff team, but we'll be better. I'm more worried about college teams trying to sweep him away when he has success at this historically mediocre program. And that's where the buyout comes into play. We're probably gonna end up having to bid against national powers who will pay him millions more with essentially no buyout to deter them. But if that happens, we're winning on the field. And it's a hell of a lot better than having a coach nobody else wants, which is what we have pretty much always ended up with after coaching changes. Mack 1.0 is the only exception in my ifetime.

ETA: He also has a history here from his childhood. He has an affection for the place which helped us get him. So I don't think he's just gonna up and move to Tuscaloosa the first time they go 8-4 because they offer him millions more. But he will play us for more with that offer, and I have no problem with that.
