I don't know if nycfan wanted to just leave it be, but we had a fine book thread on this board.

Reading George Packer's The Emergency, fiction, something sort of like a 1984 for our times. Good, about halfway in.

Before that: The Origin of Language, How We Learned to Speak and Why, by Madeline Baekman; What Can We Know: A Novel, about a scholar of a radically damaged, changed Earth in 2119, investigating human history--different and quite good; The Arrogant Ape, by Christine Webb, which is about our false assumptions that we are better than other animals (brilliant, and the best nonfiction work I've read this year).
