UNC seeking naming rights sponsor for Kenan Stadium :: WRAL.com

"UNC seeking naming rights sponsor for Kenan Stadium
Kenan will remain part of the stadium’s name in some capacity, said Rick Barakat, the new chief revenue officer for the athletic department."

But will the Kenans and especially the Rands stand for this?

I wonder just how embarrassing they can make it?

Cheetos Kenan Stadium?

Viagra Belichick Kenan Happening Arena?

I can't remember the name, but's there is this company with a real catchy name. You see their trucks everywhere. I think they deliver gasoline to service stations. They would be a great match for the stadium. We could start some sort of ad campaign along the lines of, "We always deliver!" But I worry how much this company would pay for having its name on the stadium.

If Union Carbide was still a company--not just something Dow Chemical had acquired--that would be a great name for the stadium. I still remember the first day of Chem 61 where the professor started with something like, "Let me tell you about two former students, while not in this building, were once sitting in your position, William Rand Kenan and John Motley Morehead, Jr. and the company they founded Union Carbide. If the truth was stretched just a tad to make the story more "concise", well it really wasn't going to be on the exam.

Corporate naming rights for Kenan was inevitable, given the spiraling costs of college football. I just hope we get a national name - Coca Cola, Mercedes, Chick-fil-a, BOA or Wells - for the name instead of a lesser regional company such as "Pilot Company" for Tennessee or "Quikrete" on the Atlanta Braves' uniform.

LOL, I just got an email notice that an old school chum of mine, Kenan Rand, had posted something on Facebook. I don't think he's related to the Kenan's or the Rand's you mentioned, but he is randman's first cousin...

I suspect that there is a connection there.

You would think, but they've never touted it. It's distant if it's even there. I was acquainted with one of the younger Kenan daughters when I was at Carolina, she knew I was from Wilson and that I was friends with those guys, she never mentioned being kin to them (understandable in randman's case, although he was a different kind of crazy back then than he is now)...

Would be funny if Duke Energy or Duke’s Mayo got the naming rights. Or State Farm for that matter.

Just one? Hell, all of the money came from Mary basically being a gold digger and marrying a man about 100 years older than her then likely getting killed by her new husband and her family for the same money.
I disagree with the "all" assertion. I tend to think that William Rand Kenan's discovery of how to make acetylene from calcium carbide and John Motley Morehead's discovery of how to make calcium carbide from coal and lime might have put a little cash in each of their pockets. Surely there are others posting on this board who took Chem 61.

Especially the mayo. "Duke's Kenan Stadium" would suck for y'all. It reminds me of what my Tiger bretheren (and sisteren) always say, that we own Willie-Brice.

My hopes that the stadium would stay free of big money influence were dashed a few years ago with the "Chris Smith Field at Kenan Stadium" thing. But at least that's an individual.

I suppose a naming agreement was inevitable, but with Mack it probably would've been tasteful and a partners we're familiar with. Think "Wells Fargo Kenan Stadium"

Now -with the hiring of Belichick indicating that we've sold our soul entirely- I expect the naming agreement to go to the highest bidder and be the most ridiculous you can imagine. NASCAR-race levels of product placement. "Call 811.com. Every Dig. Every Time Kenan Stadium"
