Anybody ever been to the Bare Dark Sky Observatory in Burnsville? My wife and our sons and their wife and fiancee are going Friday night as part of a weekend trek to the Asheville/Hendersonville area.

Breakfast at Hendough, an apple orchard visit, some shopping, and at least one or two cideries and breweries are also on the agenda.

When was this observatory built? I used to go to Burnsville on business. It’s probably a good place to get away from light pollution.

I have recently moved back to Weaverville outside of Asheville. Staying out near the Vance Homeplace just off of Reems Creek.

Last night at 4:36 my dogs just had to go out so I trudged it outside. The sky blew me away and there was a half moon.

There is nothing better than the majesty of a dark starry night. To me it makes me realize that our problems on this little rock is as nothing compared to the beauty of the night sky.

Not sure. Here's a link

We debating doing this or going to PARI over in Pisgah but they were already doing a special Leonids viewing on Saturday only and we wanted a more general celestial viewing experience
Four, I know this is off topic, but I just listened to Bubbles Up. For those of you who are not Jimmy Buffett fans, I would encourage you to give the song a listen. It was his good bye song. It will give you comfort in these terrible times we are living thru.

Looks like Yancey County donated the use of the land to Mayland Community College in 2003; and, people associated with the college would use the high point to set up personal telescopes.

Someone had the smart idea to have the organization that determines which areas are Dark Sky certifiable to look at the area. They received the certification. In 2015 they opened the observatory. In 2021 they opened the planetarium.

Alone on a midnight passage
I can count all the falling stars
While the southern cross and the satellites
They remind me of where we are
Spinning around in circles
Living it day to day
And still twenty four hours maybe sixty good years
It's really not that long a stay

I'll second this and add that's it's actually not that far off topic. We'll be staying about halfway between Hendersonville and Brevard. As a fellow Parrothead, You probably already know that long time Coral Reefer percussionist Eric Darken started his music education at Brevard College.
