It’s still not “sad” as he’s well paid, showcasing himself, and a Tar Heel for life.
Sad is relative, but I get what he's saying. Obviously Anthony and Jackson are going to be ok, but they didn't get the full experience of being on a UNC team with great accomplishments (caveat with this season isn't over). Listen to Manek talk about his one year at UNC and it shows that the experience is pretty fun as compared to being on a regular college basketball team.

That’s life, right?

These guys don’t dream about college basketball anyway. It’s simply a necessary step to their ultimate goal.

Oh, I had recruitments I followed back into early 90s, but those didn't compare to how the obsession could unfold once the internet came along and you could log in every day to get the latest "scoop" on how things were going.

I know you remember this, but back in the dark ages before the internet you had to rely on monthly newsletters/magazines or hope to run into that one friend who supposedly "knew somebody" who "knew somebody" close to the staff for updates.
I was in line at James Dorm waiting to pick up my key to my room my freshman year when I found out he was going to Maryland.

Yeah, you had things like Street and Smith, the ACC Handbook and in the early 70s.The Poop Sheet

Because it’s assuming the Heels will suck next season.
I was talking about Ian Jackson this season. I feel bad for Ian Jackson for playing his one year in college on a bad UNC team when it is very rare that there are bad UNC teams. Felt bad for Cole Anthony for that reason as well.

I’m sure they want to win, and that when they come to UNC their goal is to win a championship. And while championships are extremely hard to win, I’m sure they at least anticipate being on a team that can compete for one. When that doesn’t happen, I’m sure that aspect of their time is Chapel Hill is disappointing for them, and I’m sure they would have preferred to win more games. And I feel bad for them that they didn’t get to experience playing on a better team.

Step 1 - Sign Wilson
Step 2 - Convince EC, ST, and DP to come back (gonna require lots of NIL and DP is probably a longshot)
Step 3 - Throw a bag at the best big man in the portal (more NIL)
Step 4 - Profit!
We gotta find somebody who can shoot the ball.

And yeah, that’s life. My father-in-law is having health isssues. Dealing with ailing parents and in-laws is part of life. It’s also very sad.

Obviously losing college basketball games isn’t nearly as sad, but when that is a big part of your life at the moment— as it is for the guys in the team— it can be very sad for them.

IJ is definitely going pro, I thought Powell would as well but he's in the midst of a pretty rough slump. I could see him coming back unless his play turns around.

Could have a starting 5 next year of:

Cadeau
Trimble
Drake
Wilson
High/Portal Big

Would need to get a difference maker at center and at least one knock down shooter as well. Would be a much better team than we are rolling out right now.

Actually, if Powell doesn’t go pro, is it possible he goes portal instead of coming back here?

certainly possible with the transfer portal but would be awful and i'm sure we'd pull out all of the stops to keep him.

also, both his parents are alums. he's a tar heel born/bred.

seems unlikely.

Unless Hubert unexpectedly gets fired I'd be extremely surprised if he transferred out. He's a UNC guy, from Pittsboro and has been a UNC fan his whole life. He's either going pro (mocks have him in 2nd round now) or coming back to UNC. Bigger question is Cadeau who I think has been a bit misused this season. All the late game ball pounding by RJ needs to be done by EC instead, some smoke that he's gone this off-season.

we should shoot for higher than high (lmao) for our starting 5 but i do think that he can be a nice part of the post rotation.

Cadeau is also someone I would be worried about when it comes to projecting next season’s roster. I think he’s an awesome PG if he has the right pieces around him and still has room to improve as a player, but I could see him feeling frustrated with his role this season.
