So, I’ve posted a lot of politics stuff on the other thread, so just making it the political pissing match one. This one is just for sharing info on the fires.

Thanks.

A Crowdsourced Wildfire App Tracks All of California’s Blazes

Watch Duty is already a lifeline for the state’s residents. Its reach could soon extend to more disasters and regions.

Behind paywall. I assume it's something that makes Democrats look terrible. If people would just clean up the brush on their yards! Dumb libs!

Addendum: Ah, it's that the Dem mayor of LA left for Ghana (gasp ... a shithole country?) BEFORE the wildfires started. Does this compare to Cruz leaving Texas DURING the winter storm weather crisis in Texas in 2021?

[MOD NOTE: details from the article posted below — nothing about Bass or Ghana — please keep these sorts of arguments in the political fire thread]

“… Fire departments used "state-of-the-art air handling systems" to help protect the building, Katherine E. Fleming, the president and CEO of the Getty Trust, told USA Today.

Moreover, builders designed the galleries with double-walled construction, which also helped protect the precious art inside.

However, it wasn't just expensive architectureand state-of-the-art firefighting that helped. Getty staff have been consistently clearing brush from the surrounding area all year as part of its fire-mitigation efforts, the museum said.

…To mitigate the risk of fire, cities, fire departments, and community members can clear dried grasslands around residential areas.

Individual homeowners can also protect their properties by clearing a 5-foot perimeter around their houses and removing flammable materials like ornamental plants, bark mulch, or deck furniture.

… Homeowners can also install noncombustible, 1/8-inch mesh screening on any vents to a crawl space or attic to prevent embers from entering the home that way.…”

Similar details emerged from the Maui fire.

No offense, nycfan, but it’s absolutely insane to start a 2nd California Fire thread.

One of the two existing threads will become the primary one and it’ll include political pissing.

It has been somewhat effective in a few other cases, at least for people who wanted to discuss things like Helene and some other topics without the descent into childish back-biting, but ok, I guess. At this point it feels like locking both is the last resort if people can’t just step back and be slightly reasonable about the discourse.

More People Are Living in the Riskiest Wildfire Zones

The Palisades and Eaton Fires in Los Angeles show the dangers of living in what’s known as the wildland-urban interface.

“… Pacific Palisades is a prime example of what happens when a fire ignites in the wildland-urban interface, or WUI. What began as a brush fire on Tuesday became a major blaze destroying at least 1,000 structures in and around the tony Los Angeles neighborhood nestled between Malibu and Santa Monica. The Eaton Fire is also burning in a similar environment in Altadena and Pasadena to the east, with at least another 1,000 buildings damaged or destroyed….”

FYI the right-wing hysterics about the hydrants being dry are completely false. The issue was not a supply problem....the reservoirs that give LA water are completely full. The issue was simply a demand problem. With fires involving a single large building it is common for fire departments to ask the water provider for that area to boost pressure to the hydrants since the fire department is pumping such a large volume of water onto the fire. Now multiply that demand times 5k houses. It simply isn't possible to distribute that much water all at one time.
Not disputing but PLEASE take it to the fire 🔥 politics thread

I would say this is probably needed in the other thread if you haven’t yet posted it. iirc, this is your area of expertise?
nycfan - I know further discussion of this should be done in the other thread, I’m just encouraging ZZLPHeels to post this info there as well.

It will be interesting to see if many do that going forward.

Not stating this as fact but I thought I read somewhere that "full" in this case is somewhat subjective. By that, officials kept the reservoirs less than full due to concerns about dam integrity. So, full to officials might not mean the same full as residents.

If you want to move this question over to the other thread I will be happy to discuss it there.
