I would say this is probably needed in the other thread if you haven’t yet posted it. iirc, this is your area of expertise?
nycfan - I know further discussion of this should be done in the other thread, I’m just encouraging ZZLPHeels to post this info there as well.
I posted a version there last night but agree no harm doing so again. Just move it from here.

It has been somewhat effective in a few other cases, at least for people who wanted to discuss things like Helene and some other topics without the descent into childish back-biting, but ok, I guess. At this point it feels like locking both is the last resort if people can’t just step back and be slightly reasonable about the discourse.
I'm sorry nycfan, but are you the one to decide what is 'childish back-biting'? Really? I appreciate what you do for the site, but if you want complete control over the discussions, I'll opt out.

Which one is Kenneth? There are about six of them now and I can't keep them all straight. I'd still wager that 50% is a good over/under for number of arson fires.
The newest one

Not disputing but PLEASE take it to the fire 🔥 politics thread
Ludicrous to ask that this poast be moved.

It’s an informative post.

Water systems are overbuilt to fight house fires. They are not overbuilt to fight 100 or 500 or 1,000 simultaneous house fires.

It started by reference to “right wing hysterics” — which I personally consider an accurate description but to me made the post part of the politics thread. Just trying to balance competing preferences and freely admit I may get it wrong as often as not.

It will be interesting to see if many do that going forward.
One of my lifelong friends lives in San Rafael in Marin County. She’s a paramedic and so was he; before being a paramedic, he was a smokejumper for YEARS.

They are hyper aware of “fireproofing” their house. They clear vegetation and dead leaves and branches weekly. They have a 10-foot gravel barrier surrounding their house. They’ve secured their crawl space.

They laughingly acknowledge that they’re fucked because their neighbors don’t do squat.

Look around your property. Look at your neighbors’s property. Who will tear down their wood porch or deck? Who will cut down the huge trees or shrubs on their property?

Who clears dead leaves and branches from their property weekly?

Who will freak out at city ordinances that mandate landscaping changes and standards?

Works for me.
Boo.

Bronx cheer.

nycfan - you do yeoman’s work for this site.

You are NOT the arbiter of what belongs on a thread and what doesn’t.

The California Fires thread was working fine.

Then, you decided that that thread needed a ZZL/ZZLP split.

If the topic is California Fires, it’s going to be info, politics, and pissing match. Let it be.

Disagree. Let the folks that want to argue politics do it on one thread and folks that just want to hear the news do it on this thread. If folks want to do both, it's not that hard to click the second link.

So often this is the case
I Wonder how they catch those guys. Like if you walk up on someone starting a fire, sure, but presumably you would also put the fire out. If fire has already been going for a little bit and the person has left the area so as to not get caught or burned up, I'm just not seeing in my head how it's possible to catch people.
