I'm not arguing with you, but these types of hot takes seem a little hasty to me. Would it have been better if Bass had not been in Ghana when all this started? Yes, of course. Did she know these fires might happen when she left for Ghana? I have no idea. Maybe she does deserve some criticism. But it's not exactly easy to get from Ghana to LA on a moment's notice. And while I agree it would be smart for the LA mayor to have a staff dedicated to rebutting disinformation, that staff was also probably busy over the last couple of days, especially if Bass was trying to get back from Ghana on an expedited basis.

Regardless, what's unconscionable is the soon-to-be president of the United States attacking Bass and Newsom while they're in the middle of triaging one of the worst disasters in recent California history. It's despicable, immoral, grotesque behavior by the leader of the Republican Party, and I'm still waiting for a single one of the GOPers who post here to make any effort at defending it.
Along these lines, we should remember that this is the mayor of Los Angeles. It's one thing to get home from Ghana if you're on Air Force One. Pretty sure the mayor of Los Angeles is flying commercial to Ghana. She's definitely not on a private plane.

Agreed — I am just observing that as Mayor of LA it’s not like she was surprised by the timing or arrival of the Santa Ana winds and related fire risks, and being out of the country at that time was not a great idea, even though in reality she probably could handle as much via telecommunications from Ghana as on the ground in LA. Politicians squander political capital this way. This is when people expect to see you.

its very real in Hollywood. it looks like they stopped the Hollywood Hills Blaze from coming down, but that's a couple miles from Hollywood.

I can see the Hollywood sign from my balcony facing the hills. Luckily one of my neighbors is an environmental scientist and giving us the real updates, but we are definitely on evacuation watch and it could get weird out here.

i just got back in town from EOY this morning 😩
Man I hope things work out for you. You and the other 50K people (or more) on evacuation watch. It's got to be nerve-wracking. Is this an apartment balcony or a house? When I was very young, we lived in the San Fernando Valley for a few years. I have one memory of a fire being close enough to see the smoke in the distance, and my dad was on the roof hosing it down (for fire resistance I guess -- I have no idea if this is an accepted practice). And I'm guessing this fire is at least an order of magnitude bigger and more intense.

BTW where or what is EOY?

Fairly confident this is old. If it's not, there's been a very, very similar video floating around reddit for years.
Just curious, was it the 5th comment to the story that linked a newspaper article and video from October 31, 2019 that was the clinching clue that this wasn't new?

Had someone here at work just tell me California is on fire because they support the LGBTQ community. I said and all this time I thought it was because of the Santa Ana winds.

No. Didn't watch it because I've seen the still pop up on reddit numerous times.

Santa Ana season is typically October through December, but obviously it can run into the shoulder months.

Awfully hard to question her judgment for planning a trip and leaving the country from September through March or April… on the off chance there is a Santa Ana at all while she’s gone, and on the further remote odds it affects a place like LA the way it has.

This was not at all foreseeable to a degree that reflects having neglected her duties.

1. Shoulder months? Never heard that expression. Cool, learned something else today. That's like two things in 10 minutes.

2. Also, she was in Ghana for an inauguration. While people like Elon perhaps think that other countries should schedule their affairs based on the needs of unaffiliated Americans, it actually doesn't work that way. Ghana held its inauguration when Ghana deemed appropriate, and Bass was there. She couldn't have chosen to go next month.

3. This is the same bullshit they pulled out when the ship hit the bridge in Baltimore. DEI is to blame. Funny how they stopped talking about it after the supposed DEI folks got the harbor repaired in record time. It's almost as if they have a thing against minorities, but I've been assured they have black friends so they can't be racists.

There is a 100 billion gallons of water a year that doesn't go to Southern California because of the Delta Smelt but instead, is routed out into the Pacific Ocean. I don't know whether that is good or bad but apparently those are the facts.
Are you sure?
