I never thought much of mickey ewell frankly so I think I only went into spanky's once...at least through the front door. When I worked at The Hardback Cafe and Bookstore I had numerous interchanges with folks there over the alleyway between and the dumpsters located there.

The Rat was fine...that big ole bowl of cheese they served can now be had at a place on mainstreet Pittsboro called S&T's Soda Shoppe ( Old Fashioned Restaurant in Pittsboro | S&T's Soda Shoppe ). Once I went in there and sat at the bar and had a few...I tried to do that at least once everywhere.

Mickeys first wife was fun to look at in her fancy convertible

Used to play? (mostly for riding around and drinking beer to accompany real golfer friends) Twin Lakes a bunch as I lived down the road from it. There was a tamed fox with a collar on him that would jump out and run along with you on that long fairway back by the houses. Woukdn't let you get within a couple feet of him but enjoyed most any food offerings you gave him.

This play was more to my taste and it's about that time of year.

Oh and a shout out to Pump Boys and Dinettes inspired by when Merritt's was a service station.

Saw King Mackerel 3rd performance at the Cradle when they were still noodling around with it. Watched it evolve into a more polished show over the years. I still like the cassette version vs CD as it was less 'produced'.

I honestly don't think Mr Wilkins had a beer liscense I am shocked.. Cool story about the Fox=I never heard it.I lived on Dollar road as a young adult with three kids in the 1980s

A Long Lost Campus Cemetery? A Child's Grave Beneath Abernathy Hall? I fancy myself pretty well-versed on the history of UNC but I've never, ever heard of this. "The Mitchell cemetery was originally located behind the First President's House, built in 1795 and demolished/moved in 1913 when Swain Hall was constructed on the property."...And there is much more at the link...

I was alone in my friend group in my dislike for the Rat. Didn't care for Spanky's either, come to think of it.

A curmudgeon from a young age.
The Rat had some of the worst food I’ve ever eaten. But I LOVED the vibe. I would go there and eat that shitty food just because I liked being in there.

When I was a kid, maybe 60/61? my mom took me to the Dental school from Raleigh for free cleaning by students a couple times. Then we would eat at the Rat because well, the Rat. Neither the cleaning nor the food was worth the drive.

But yes, the vibe as you put it was kind of a must do every year or so in college.

I liked the Double gambler. It's about the only thing I much cared for so I went every 3-4 weeks, maybe.

In re The Rat: I know that The Rat was not fine food. But the whole time I was an Undergraduate, I was working at least 20 hours a week. Which really cut into my socializing. So, typically a visit to The Rat was the result me standing around listening to a group of fellow students talk about what to do after class. Someone would always suggest, "Let's go to The Rat." And if I had some free time before work, I would join them, just like I was part of the group. And they treated me like I was part of the group. So for me, my memories of The Rat are golden. But I could never afford a "Double Gambler" until years later, when I was in town, as an adult, for a meeting. And I learned the "Double Gambler" was not a treat that I missed out on, but something altogether different that I had been spared from.

Some of my part time jobs while at UNC: Night/Evening/Weekend Orderly at Gravely Sanitorium, clerk at The Cadesus Book Store at the Med School, Memo Machine Operator/office boy for the NC Symphony--back wheni it was still in three connected trailers, snd gas pumper at Walker's Gulf, etc.

My parents built their dream house in SW Orange County. They moved in the winter of 1995-96.

I look at that photo of Cat Baby and think, “I remember him being A LOT fatter than that.”

Maybe it’s a sign of how much fatter we Americans are today than back in Cat Baby’s day.
