Sooooooooo, I think it's a terrible, unnecessary, and inflammatory post about Haitian refugees and Haitians in general, but I wouldn't call it racist necessarily. With that being said, the political discourse in this country continues to deteriorate rapidly and it appears Republicans are mostly responsible.
I'm not saying most Republicans are racist, but most racist are Republicans

Even with your absurdly narrow definition of racism you’d have to admit this is incredibly xenophobic at least, right?

Always cracks me up when people's definition of racism is "the only way someone can be accurately assessed to be a racist is if they grab a bullhorn and explicitly say 'I believe that (insert race) is inferior to my race!'" What Higgins said is nakedly, disgustingly racist.

Republicans run from the term "racist" like Democrats run from the word "liberal."

Oh, yeah, no doubt and totally inappropriate, disrespectful, and just plain mean.
Don't carry water for terrible people who say and do terrible things by saying shit like "Well, it actually wasn't that terrible".

It's just being a plain old decent human being. Try it. You might find it creates a virtuous cycle and you life gets better for it.

To me, for something to actually be racist, it would need to imply or explicitly state or claim that one race or ethnicity is inherently superior to another. This particular tweet or post never said that. Totally in poor taste, but in my opinion, not necessarily racist.
Yeah, nobody cares what racism means "to you." The word has a meaning. If you want to assign it a different meaning than the one it has, fine. I can also redefine the adjective superrific to mean "the quality of being the greatest human on Earth" but that don't make it so.

More importantly, the concept also exists and has meaning. Again, nobody gives a shit if you think racism is only about genetic superiority. It's not, and there are literally tens of thousands of books (if not more) and scholarly articles demonstrating as much. The disciplines involved run the gamut: history, psychology, sociology, organizational behavior, economics, political science, law, etc. If you want to stand up and say, "I don't care about any of that. Only my view matters," fine but you will find yourself on ignore because nobody is interested in that shit.

I'm using a dictionary definition. All I was doing was justifying why I think what I think. I never said only my view matters either. I condemn the comments as inappropriate and unbecoming of an elected official. Someone who would post that on social media isn't a very nice person, however, I don't think it necessarily means they are actually racist. I think racism is abhorrent, which is why I am hesitant to accuse people of racism just because they say something the shouldn't. That is all I'm trying to say.

“One of Higgins’ first appearances in the public record came in a 1992 newspaper article dug up by Bayou Brief, a Louisiana publication that has investigated the congressman. Higgins, then 30, was commenting on Pat Buchanan’s run for president, which came one year after the former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard and neo-Nazi David Duke was nearly elected governor of Louisiana.

“Duke won’t get the vote. Pat will. Pat represents much of the same positions,” Higgins explained to a reporter while attending a Buchanan rally—correctly sussing out Buchanan’s white nationalism. “Regardless of the fact that David’s a homeboy and all that, the boy’s a Nazi, and that’s a real problem.”

Still, Higgins admitted that he’d recently voted for David Duke for governor of Louisiana (a man who once decorated his college dorm room with a Nazi flag and picture of Adolf Hitler).”

Yeah, I’m sure the guy who voted for David Duke and Pat Buchanan isn’t racist.

So certainly looks as if he has a racist past. Very sad. Thanks for the info dig up!
