I have no idea but I don't think Scheyer's wit and charm is the reason for their success. It actually started about 10 years ago under K. Two things I know,is they've run an incredible amount of talent through that school in that time without actually winning the ultimate prize and private schools can find more loopholes than a state university with a hostile B0T.
I have never once assumed that anything other than money was the motivation BUT Id like to know which school is spending money more efficiently. I dont think very many, if any, of our own roster is here because of wit or charm either.

Probably. dook has been outpaying everyone for years.

There's a reason they have future NBA starting 5'a every year beyond the stunning campus and beautiful coeds.
I have always heard this and believe it. It makes no sense to me that dook would fill its classes with top 5 and top 10 guys every year getting pretty much everyone they want. There has to be something that tips in their favor so often. Not like the to banging title banners anymore.

I've always figured it was connections and jobs for families and such that don't so much show up on a bottom line. There are some immensely well connected Duke alumni with broad connections who can make things happen. It's not that we don't, but the public/private school culture would suggest that they would be more likely, more secretive and possibly have generations of practice concerning hidden influences.

True, I have absolutely no evidence to support this but it feels right. Yeah, I know.

Isn’t Steve Pearl’s only “accomplishment” being Bruce Pearl’s son?

He has a 5-year, $3 million/year contract.

All he’s done is be Bruce’s offspring.

Sounds like a Belichick kid or BFF or BFF child.
Nepotism is college caching is the weirdest thing. You see a fair amount of it, and I’m not aware of any case where it’s worked out. It seems like schools would be a little more skeptical when a coach who is leaving is trying to push his son as a successor.

Ehhh. With the talent advantage Scheyerface has had he hasn't done anything remarkable.

He started on 3rd base.
Exactly. Folks think K and d00k hit a triple when hiring Cryerface -

And yes, the money bags and top recruiting classes started 10-15 years ago. Just after Calishady started doing it a UK, Ratface fell in line right after that.

And yes, they've been paying boatloads more ever since then, and still do to this day. They're like the Yankees and Dodgers, throwing money around, spending WAAYY more than all the other "small market" teams... always getting the best money can buy. Always.

And once you bought all those top-end Jimmys and Joes, all a coach has to do is roll the ball out there and say "go get em boys".
But some how or other - only K's 2015 team won the World Series. All the rest of those top-heavy teams got shut out in the preliminary and divisional rounds - some getting swept in 4 games.

And one of those teams that did make it to the FF got choked by a Hubert-led team.

I'll take Hubert and my light-colored blue team.

I hope State beats the d00kies. There. I said it.

They have ESPN, CBS, and probably other sports outlets constantly singing their praises and giving them an inordinate amount of exposure. And with regard to title banners, if you asked the average person who has some familiarity with college basketball but doesn’t keep track of its history (including recent history) how many national championships Duke has won in the past 10 years, they would probably answer that they don’t know but they guess it’s been a few.

Dick and Tony Bennett at Washington State comes to mind.
I forgot that Dick preceded Tony there. That’s actually a very interesting case because Dick was not at all successful in his three seasons at Washington State. He went 13-16, 12-16, and 11-17. You would think Washington State would just want the Bennetts gone after that. But Tony got the job, turned things around, and gave them a level of success they otherwise haven’t had in modern times.

Dick Bennett had a reputation for turning around programs and Washington State was terrible when Bennett agreed to go there. Bennett had turned down Washington and Oregon State the year before and the scuttlebutt at the time was that Dick agreed to coach WSU because they had an agreement that Tony would be his successor. In essence, Dick agreed to go to WSU to ensure Tony got a P6 HC position and to build the program expressly to hand it off to Tony.

I’ll give Scheyer more credit for this season than some of his others

dook had double digit 2H leads in both losses this season. They have been consistently good against top competition

Having one of the top 1-3 players in the sport helps a lot. But who is their #2? #3? A bunch of guys who are limited offensively or streaky

This team is built not to lose to lose to inferior teams through size, defense, and rebounding. Which is also a very good combo for beating the best teams

Fucking shit mouth dick vitale.

Well they aren't getting what they are paying for.
Do we know what they are paying? Are we getting what we are paying for? We state like it is absolutely certain that Duke is paying exponentially more than we are in total roster spend. Is that true? How would anyone know?

I think some people greatly underestimate the purchasing power of each program; dollars are not equivalent. Pete Nakos has reported that Duke spent about 10 million dollars on this year’s roster, while we’ve spent around 14 million. A big reason for the discrepancy in purchasing power is that HD/staff is perceived as being unable to develop talent, while Duke can point to several stars in the NBA that have gone through their program. They can, correctly, promise that you will have as much exposure there than anywhere else, most likely more than anywhere else. You will be in contention for titles. And many more perks. HD can say all of those things, but that wouldn’t be true, and players and (more importantly?) agents know that. All of these things result in us having to pay more for equivalent talent than they do, which means that you end up with us spending more for a less-talented roster. (Don’t get me wrong though, we have a lot of talent on this roster.)

We can talk about the advantages that Scheyer was given and the advantages that HD was given, who had more, and so on, but it’s you can’t argue that Scheyer hasn’t improved his program from where it was when he started, and you can’t argue that HD has improved his program from where it was when he started - Scheyer has been a much better leader of his program than HD has. There’s a big gap between Duke and UNC currently and it looks to continue.

Duke is 60 - 6 in the past two seasons, UNC is 43 - 20. Since Scheyer took over, Duke is 114 - 22, while UNC is 92 - 41.

Here’s a staggering stat, Scheyer has 7 less wins in total than HD (114 to 121), and 13 more quad 1 wins (32 to 19), in a year less of games.

Both schools are investing heavily into their programs, but one is drastically outperforming the other.

Sad comment: how much do some of these players REALLY care about winning titles?

It's about the NBA showcase and dollars.

I miss real college sports
