I sound like an "old", but I just can't get into college hoops as much as I used to. Although I agree that players should be compensated in some way if their name or likeness is being used to sell merchandise, I don't like directly paying players to come to a school. Just doesn't feel the same to me anymore.

Yes. The lessening of allegiance to the school is a big part.

But first the wildly expanding conference(s) - does anyone really give a rat's ass about Syracuse?

To one and dones. Can barely remember Ed Davis even though he was on a championship team.

To NIL which I agree with the likeness and image part but it has turned into a whole "which schools can shovel the most money to athletes" hellhole.

To the transfer portal...

It used to be that part of the joy was watching players grow through the pogram over the years and having an investment in the team. Not just the Heels but all through the conference (when it was much smaller) and to some degree nationally. Now you have no idea who these guys are unkess you are a hard core college basketball wonk.

For those that might know Dallas there is now a billboard on Central Expressway near Mockingbird that reads "Welcome to ACC Country". This is by the SMU campus. Damn.

All of the above

Ed Davis was a “two and done” (like Sheed, Stack, Joe Forte, Harrison Barnes). He broke his wrist in the 1st game against d00k and missed the last 14 games.

I feel the same way. I don't mind players getting paid for the NIL stuff. But now they are really getting paid to play, and can play at four different schools if they want. I think they need some kind of contract like the pros if they are going to get paid to make it harder to transfer so much. I also hate the conference expansion. I already think Syracuse, BC, Louisville, Pitt and Notre Dame in the conference is bad enough. But now SMU and two teams from CA is just ridiculous. I think conferences should make sense geographically. Also, the current ACC is just watered down. I think the SEC is the best conference overall now for all sports. I wish UNC had been more proactive when all the expansion started years ago and had left for the SEC. Now I am hoping the original Power 5 schools just break away from the NCAA and form their own league with all the teams under one umbrella like the pros, and just have different regions. There were 65 schools in the original Power 5 conference if you include Notre Dame. They could have 8 different regions based on geography.

The P5 no longer exists. At most, it’s the P4.

Ultimately, the American College Athletic League will form. It’ll have 32-64 schools, probably 40-48. It will consist of:
  • SEC minus Vandy and Mississippi State (16-2=14)
  • Big Whatever minus Northwestern, Rutgers, Maryland?, Purdue? (18-2=16)
  • Notre Dame
  • UNC, UVA, Clemson, FSU, Arizona, Utah?, Colorado?
That’s 34-40 schools.

Other possibilities: Arizona State, Oklahoma State, Boise State, someone from the Bay Area?, ACC schools?, Houston?, Texas schools?

This athletic league will host national championship tourneys and it’ll invite other D1 schools to have 64-128 team tourneys (at least for Men’s Basketball, Women’s Basketball, and Baseball).
