Just read that the dude is set to make $54 million AFTER getting fired, as that is what LSU owes him. So he fails utterly at LSU and will still walk away with a fortune. IMO, the amount of money being paid to coaches at these big schools is obscene and increasingly indefensible, especially given that many schools are also cutting humanities and liberal arts departments to "save money" and otherwise cutting back on the educational side of their institutions, which is supposedly why they exist in the first place. (I know, I know, it's an SEC school and they really exist just for the football program, but still).

Louisiana has no poverty as we know

It’s not going to be a good year to be looking for a HC given the number of big name schools looking for a new coach.

Where does this leave schools like VaTech and State? 😀

plenty of young ambitious coaches out there. do a nationwide search thorough hiring process instead of paying ridiculous amounts for another fcs staff where theres zero guarantees. pay for players, not coaches. just dumb dumb dumb for a unc to hire old bb and fam and pay almost 20 mil a year.

I have never been able to understand these insanely exorbitant buyout figures. What are these schools thinking? Brian Kelly was literally having his agent call every major school with an opening for the last couple of years during his tenure at Notre Dame begging for another job. LSU could’ve had him for whatever they wanted. Same thing with Jimbo Fisher at Texas A&M a few years ago. Just insane to me that these schools allow themselves to get bent over the barrel financially like this.

I don't understand it either but there's a market for it and if you're the coach, you can't really say no. You're very likely to get fired eventually so got to get paid while you can.

And you've seen schools that were once winning national titles but didn't play that game that have declined into obscurity. Looking at you Nebraska, and before this year Georgia Tech. And of course you see schools that did play that game that were once winning national titles that have declined into obscurity. Looking at you tennessee. Maybe the guys that didn't open the checkbook but got the same results are actually the smart ones.

I think that has to change though. Someone mentioned above, pay the players. They are even more unproven than the coach at that level but they're cheaper and you can get rid of them easier.

Oh yeah, I totally get it from the coaches' standpoint. Hell of a great gig if you can get it! I remember a quote that was supposedly from Ed Orgeron when he was fired at LSU, something like "you want to pay me $30 million to walk away? Brother, just tell me which door I need to walk my ass out of!"

That is a funny quote but not sure it helps him get his next job. I think he got his $30 million at 60 years old so maybe he didn't care but I think he's looking for a new job for next year.
