  • Pittsburgh vs. West Virginia: The Backyard Brawl ceased its annual play in 2011 when West Virginia left the Big East Conference.
  • Kansas vs. Missouri: The "Border War" was discontinued in 2011 when Missouri moved to the SEC.
  • Nebraska vs. Oklahoma: This historic rivalry, which included the famous 1971 "Game of the Century," ended in 2010 when Oklahoma left the Big 12 Conference.

IMO, the end of these regional rivalries is one of the reasons why I think interest in college sports seems to be waning. WVU fans used to get fired up for that Pittsburgh game, and the fact that the two schools were relatively close to one another made for real bragging rights. My guess is that nobody in West Virginia really gives a crap about Texas Tech - they want to beat them, certainly, but as they'll likely never meet a Tech fan in West Virginia the passionate hatred will never be there.

Interest in college sports is at an all-time high. Your personal interest may be less, but the TV ratings have been through the roof.
