Commas and Quotation Marks

I hate putting the punctuation inside the quotation marks when I am ending the sentence with a word/ phrase and using quotes to denote "irony". It looks weird to me.

This kind of baffles me...i.e., this assertion since I feel absolutely the opposite way about the look. For the punctuation to not be inside the quotation mark actually repels me. Kind of like walking around in a gym carrying a basketball does...you ought to be dribbling it, otherwise you are in violation of the rules of the game.

I have acquiesced to the new "one space after the period at the end of the sentence" rule, so I humbly ask that the rest of the English-speaking world join me in placing the comma and period OUTSIDE of the quotation marks where they belong.

While I too have come to accept the single space at the end of the sentence, I absolutely will not incorrectly place the punctuation OUTSIDE of the quotation marks (except in the case pointed to by @sringwal back on page one).

If the period is the end of the sentence, why does the quotation mark that is part of the quotation inside the sentence come after the end of the sentence?

If the phrase inside the quotation marks isn't a sentence, why does it have a period inside the quotation marks to indicate the end of a sentence?

Just because we've been doing it incorrectly for hundreds of years doesn't mean we have to continue doing it incorrectly.

I accept the "one space after the period at the end of the sentence" rule but hitting the space bar twice is so ingrained and automatic from my junior high typing class (which was required for all students) that I’m not sure I will ever be able to comply. Adherence to the “one space” rule for me generally requires three keystrokes, the automatic two spaces then a backspace, so it doesn’t save me any keystrokes, in practice it is quite the opposite and I’m too damn old to try to alter this habit.

I’m in the same boat. Hitting the space bar twice is so ingrained in me. Plus, it serves as a pause while I think what I’m going to say in the next sentence.

You are a f’ing traitor to your generation. (I don’t know what generation you are but I suspect not one that grew up with one space after the period.)

I was arguing this recently. Someone said that word processors add extra white space after end of sentences. That is fine if you are using a variably spaced font.

But when my millennial boss demands I remove two spaces after a period in code comments, I want to rip his head off.

One space does not make sense with monospaced fonts which all editors of code would be. It makes things run together and hard to read.

And get off my lawn.

I totally get from where you are coming. Two spaces makes text much more readable and prevents confusion after an abbreviation. If we can be forced into that unnecessary change, we can make the logical one.
