So the rule should read: "When a period or a comma is the appropriate punctuation, they should be placed INSIDE of the quotation marks."

Have to point out that both the Chicago Manual and Turabian cover the situations you brought up but as a stand-alone statement the modification is better.

I, as the author of any work I produce, am the master of my commas and periods and quotation marks and will put them wherever I believe they best fit.

If that is unacceptable to others, then they are not required to read my work.

I hate putting the punctuation inside the quotation marks when I am ending the sentence with a word/ phrase and using quotes to denote "irony". It looks weird to me.

I have about one word per sentence I have to spell check I actually limit my desired vocabulary because..I no longer can spell

As bad as my English, grammar, and spelling are it's amazing to think they have actually improved greatly over the years. It's amazing that I graduated high school.

I literally searched for this rule about a month ago because I still sometimes get confused about it. Something just seems off with the way I approach it.

I think forums inherently have you quoting people a lot, not using the quote feature here, but actually going “I love cheese.” And right there assuming I put the period inside the quote marks but not always being certain. Blah blah.
