Republicans really do seem to think that mostly empty space > densely-populated urban areas. A lot of those red counties in Virginia have less than 25,000 people, and some less than 10,000. But hey, unlike all of those city people they're "Real Americans" whose votes should count more than urban areas.
ETA: But it's also worth noting how few in the GOP leadership actually live in those red areas. Nearly all of them live in urban areas, often blue ones. Most of the GOP high command wouldn't be caught dead living in deep-red rural counties.
