All this became inevitable once China took over Hong Kong. I believe they promised when they took over that they would treat Hong Kong "separately" from the rest of Mainland China, but over the past quarter-century they've gradually exerted more and more control over the city and removed more and more of its "separate" status. I'm sure that all of this will serve as a warning to Taiwan of what will happen to them if they ever come under the control of the Mainland.

LOL. I'm sure that these nations would love to join an American alliance with a highly unstable and erratic leadership that is well-known for only looking after its own interests and lying about everything under the sun to everyone. With our international power and prestige in clear decline, and after seeing what's happened to the UK's economy since they stupidly left the EU, I don't see any other nation willingly leaving the security and prosperity of the EU to form a shaky alliance at best with a nation led by Donald J. Trump. Any nation that is dumb enough to do so would be doing an epic self-own along the lines of vulnerable MAGA voters here who voted for Dear Leader and now can't believe they're being harassed and deported or are losing their jobs and farms.

Memories must be fairly short, or Chilean schools must do a terrible job of teaching history, for an admirer of Pinochet to be elected president of Chile.
It's a global phenomenon. I have read about people in Spain being nostalgic for Franco, same deal for Peron in Argentina.

some people just like to be ruled

What seems really crazy about Chileans being nostalgic for Pinochet is that his regime was fairly recent. Chileans
as young as 40 likely have memories of his regime and it seems like they, and younger Chileans, would certainly hear horror stories from their parents.

These people are completely unserious.

Poorly worded, on the edge of sounding crazy, but not entirely inaccurate:

Yes, the major concern is the New World Screwworm (NWS), a parasitic fly whose maggots eat living animal tissue, which has moved north from South America through Central America into Mexico, prompting US action like temporary import bans from Mexico and intense monitoring to prevent re-establishment in the US where it was eradicated decades ago. The USDA is working to keep this pest out due to recent outbreaks in Central America and proximity to the US border, as it poses a serious threat to US livestock, economy, and public health

Well, yes. It's highly inaccurate . It has the same thing to do with immigration of any sort as your brain has to do with your breathing. They share the same approximate location. At least, you benefit.
