CURRENT EVENTS - FEBRUARY 2026

So the WH staff spends all day - including his Press Secretary - trying desperately to do damage control by claiming that Dear Leader was unaware of the post and didn't make it himself, but that some hapless WH staffer did it - and yet at the end of the day Trump totally undermines their efforts by saying that he saw the video, told them to post it, and didn't see anything wrong with it. Besides the obvious racism, it's also just more evidence of what a total clown show this administration is.

The Smithsonian Institution’s Folklife Festival, held in Washington every summer since 1967, will not take place this summer in its usual spot on the National Mall, which instead will be used for President Trump’s Great American State Fair.

The Smithsonian announced on Thursday that this summer, for the 250th anniversary of American independence, it will take its festival “on the road” to communities across the country and in three U.S. territories.

“By taking the Folklife Festival beyond Washington, D.C., the Smithsonian will join millions of people in their own communities to commemorate, celebrate and contemplate this national milestone,” a news release said.

The release made no direct reference to the National Mall. But a spokeswoman for the Smithsonian, Linda St. Thomas, confirmed that no part of the festival would take place there.

The Folklife Festival, the Smithsonian’s oldest and largest public event, “honors contemporary living cultural traditions and celebrates those who practice and sustain them,” according to the institution’s website. Typically, the festival brings artisans, performers and speakers from all around the country to the Mall for several weeks around July 4.

“…The people interviewed for this story spoke on the condition that their names not be disclosed because much of the intelligence around the whistle-blower complaint remains classified.

One official said there was no other intelligence that led officials to think the two officials had been speaking truthfully. Some intelligence analysts concluded the two foreign nationals were either gossiping or deliberately spreading misinformation.

… And some people, including administration critics, who have reviewed the report and have considered the underlying intelligence to be significant, agreed that Ms. Gabbard did not act improperly by restricting distribution of the report.

… While inspectors general are required to notify Congress only about complaints they find credible, some of the administration critics said Ms. Gabbard erred in not alerting the congressional intelligence committees or members of congressional leadership about the whistle-blower report or the underlying intelligence soon after it was lodged.…”
