“… Our first leader helped define not only the character of the presidency but the character of the country. Washington modeled what it means to put the good of the nation over self-interest and selfish ambition. He embodied integrity and modeled why it’s worth aspiring to. And he carried himself with dignity and self-restraint, honoring the office without allowing it to become invested with near-mythical powers.

I often say that the office of the president is more important than the occupant; that the institution of the presidency gives ballast to our ship of state. For that stability we are indebted to the wisdom of our founding fathers’ governing charter and the humility of our nation’s first president. It has guided us for 250 years, and it will strengthen us for our next 250 years.”

“…Winning a referendum—possibly in October—is a taller order than getting it on the ballot; polls suggest support in Alberta for independence sags toward 30% and wagering on Polymarket puts the odds of a yes vote at just 13%. Opposition to independence—and Trump—is strongest in urban Alberta.

For Canada loyalists, polls are cold comfort in the age of social-media disinformation, untraceable political money and shocks like Britain’s exit from the European Union, not to mention the Trump factor.

… A vote favoring Albertan independence would trigger a complex, and untested, series of constitutional procedures before taking effect. “It doesn’t mean separation happens,” said David Percy, a law professor at the University of Alberta, citing hurdles including ratification by the House of Commons and seven of 10 provinces.…”
My guess is that this won't come close to passing if it gets on a ballot, but that Trumpers won't care as it will allow them to brag (falsely) about "how much support" there is in Canada for joining the USA ("Look, so many people support this that in Alberta they had to allow them to vote on it!") and when it loses Trump will just claim that it was yet another "stolen election" by the "elites" (presumably Canadian this time) and that if "fair elections" were held overwhelming numbers of all Canadians would vote to join the USA. That's how he and MAGA works - create chaos, cause as much trouble and havoc as possible, and if you lose just lie and claim your opponents stole the election from you and that's the only reason you lost.

ETA: The fact that the vote would be to declare independence from Canada and not join the USA will also be ignored by Trumpers. These types of facts don't bother them at all if it allows them to create the narrative they want to sell to their gullible MAGA base.
