CURRENT EVENTS July 14 - July 20

“Some National Weather Service offices in California are among those hit hardest by meteorologist vacancies, according to new data from an employee union — heightening concerns as the state contends with another potentially devastating fire season and the ongoing threat of extreme weather.

The staffing shortages have forced some offices to outsource overnight operations to neighboring offices or reduce how often they issue forecast products that help keep decision-makers and first responders abreast of potentially hazardous weather conditions.

… Two of the nation’s weather forecast offices with the worst meteorologist vacancy rates are in California. They are the Hanford office, which covers the San Joaquin Valley, including Fresno and Bakersfield; and the Sacramento office, which also covers Stockton, Modesto, Vallejo, Chico and Redding….”

This is not really a current event but I don't want to create a new thread for it. I found this article on CNN to be fascinating.

This quote in particular --

The fire raids, McNamara said in the 2003 documentary “The Fog of War,” showed humanity “has not really grappled with what are, I’ll call it, ‘the rules of war.’ LeMay said, ‘If we’d lost the war, we’d all have been prosecuted as war criminals.’ And I think he’s right. He, and I’d say I, were behaving as war criminals. LeMay recognized that what he was doing would be thought immoral if his side had lost. But what makes it immoral if you lose and not immoral if you win?

I haven't been following the DoE cuts very closely. It's reported that they have about a $270 billion budget, 4200 employees and, from what I've read, their primary function is handing out money to schools . They don't create educational material. They do nothing as it relates to teacher training or classroom curriculum.

They don't seem to do much of anything that actually involves the education of the average student that would improve our educational standing in the world.

I don't see why most of the functions can't be absorbed by other departments.

This is the guy Ramrouser adores, right?
Seriously, y'all don't find Gutfeld funny...or at least clever? I've followed him since the days of "Red Eye." Jesse Watters is also entertaining.
Fox is news channel, carrying news throughout the day and ending with Bret Baier's show - granted with a right of center slant. The nighttime lineup is conservative entertainment, ending the evening with the very entertaining Greg Gutfeld.

So what thread do we use for noticing that the President is very clearly suffering from heart issues? Bruising on his hands and near his mouth, obviously swollen ankles, easily visible Frank's sign...
I've been thinking about this a good bit recently. I can't stand Vance. I think he's a morally vacuous sell-out who should never be forgiven for giving up whatever values he once held in order to rise to his current level of power. But I also think the US, and the world, would be in a far, far better place with Vance as president. Trump is truly unique in his ability to create carnage and to undermine the core of what it means to be an American. Vance would be a relatively ineffective president, but his capacity to do harm to our country is nowhere close to Trump's.

I'll never wish for the death of a US president. But Trump is old and in terrible health. And if nature takes its course over him sometime in the next 3.5 years, my confidence in the survival of the republic would increase significantly, even if Vance is woefully unsuited to lead this great nation.

Have to disagree with this. The stadium is great, great location, and they did a wonderful job with roads and traffic.

When they first announced the location I thought the same thing, one would need to leave the day before. Traffic in that area used to suck. But after attending multiple games, I'm impressed.
Yeah same

Food Banks Are Running Out of Food Exactly When More Americans Will Need Them

‘The most challenging situation I’ve seen in 17 years.’ Cuts to food stamps and other federal programs mean some people go home hungry.

🎁 —> https://www.wsj.com/economy/food-ba...4?st=CjcYxD&reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink

“…
This year, the federal government has canceled food deliveries and cut hundreds of millions of dollars in annual aid to food banks. For Aragón, the head of programming for Roadrunner Food Bank, New Mexico’s largest charitable food operation, that has meant losing more than seven million pounds of food she had been counting on.

President Trump’s megabill, passed earlier this month, includes cuts to food stamps, now known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP.

Food banks across the country were already straining under rising demand. Now, they worry many more Americans will go hungry.

… Food banks have seen requests for assistance from households—including those with children—jump sharply over the past few years, driven by the end of pandemic aid programs and the impact of inflation on grocery prices.

According to a recent survey from Feeding America, a national network of food banks, over half of 162 food banks reported demand rising this past April compared with April 2024. …”
Why a nation of excess have people going hungry.... oh yeah we're dependent on the kindness of the wealthy to give to the needy. Seems like the wealthy aren't as giving as people thought.

That picture of his hand from the press scrum yesterday was uuuuugly.

IMO, It’s more likely than not he has moderate heart failure. The chronic hand bruising, swelling, and crepe paper skin, cankles (looks to have on compression socks), and fluctuating mental clarity are consistent with cardiac issues. I chalk up his late 2024 weight loss to an “oh shit, we have to get serious about this” medical realization - or, maybe it was just a campaign component.

Other possibilities include, but do not exclude, a chronic cancer like a slow rolling lymphoma, multiple myeloma, or prostate; long covid; and kidney disease. I also would wager he’s on pain killers, because only providence (which I think is magic) would prevent him from a screaming low back and possibly sciatica, given how long he’s worn lifts and stood like the leaning tower of Pisa.
