FEMA search and rescue chief resigns after frustration with Texas flood response​



“… Ken Pagurek’s departure comes less than three weeks after a delayed FEMA response to catastrophic flooding in central Texas caused by bureaucratic hurdles put in place by the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees the disaster response agency.

Pagurek told colleagues at FEMA that the delay was the tipping point that led to his voluntary departure after months of frustration with the Trump administration’s efforts to dismantle the agency, according to two sources familiar with his thinking. It took more than 72 hours after the flooding for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to authorize the deployment of FEMA’s search and rescue network.

… “It is laughable that a career public employee, who claims to serve the American people, would choose to resign over our refusal to hastily approve a six-figure deployment contract without basic financial oversight,” another DHS spokesman said in a statement about Pagurek’s resignation. “We’re being responsible with taxpayer dollars, that’s our job.”…”

That's a lot of bullshit. While the specific words might be more or less problematic, the big problem is that it objectifies people. Devils, Bulls, Tigers, Lions . . . Indians.

By contrast, there are no teams nicknamed "whiteys" or anything of the sort (save possibly Celtics, whose origins I don't know). The names that apply to people are named after professions or roles, so to speak (e.g. Pirates, Deacons, Cavaliers) or have geographic relevance (as we all well know). But teams weren't named Indians or Redskins because they were local markers. They were named Indians because Indians sounded tough and scary. The whole idea is racist.

I don't know why the Seminole tribe has embraced its use. I'm sure they have good reasons. I don't know them, not really. But for the most part, native Americans do not like being sports mascots -- just like other Americans (hence the lack of "redneck" teams).

Redskins in particular would be like having a team named the slants with an Asian mascot.

Regarding FSU, it’s all about the $$.

The tribe gets about 1 mil/yr from FSU, and has a hand in all design, development, and contract negotiations regarding team colors, unis, merch, etc.

NOT ENOUGH.

Rid this nation of ALL racist Jim Crow, Sons of Confederate Veterans, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and Lost Cause “Monuments” and “Memorials.” Leave the ones in private cemeteries and on private land alone. Let those Lost Cause fools have their safe space.

Not enough. And, they’ll need another renaming

Imagine a US Army base named “Fort Bragg.” Named after one of the Confederates WORST and most hated generals.

In the Great War (World War I) era, the US government and military was worried about loyalty of men from the former Confederate states; PR people came up with the idea of naming bases and roads on bases after Confederates.

As a nation, let’s stop naming shit after Confederates………especially incompetent generals such as Braxton Bragg.
