“… The Justice Department is asking a federal judge to impose “substantial monetary sanctions” on a California lawyer who briefly halted but ultimately failed to block the deportation of an immigrant from Laos who pleaded guilty to attempted murder in the 1990s.

Joshua Schroeder, an immigration and intellectual property attorney based in Los Angeles, appears to be the first target of President Donald Trump’s vow to discipline lawyers who hit the federal government with lawsuits that the administration deems frivolous.

Legal experts described the sanctions motion against Schroeder, which hasn’t been previously reported, as highly unusual. DOJ brought the disciplinary action after Schroeder asked federal judges to stop the deportation of his client, Vang Lor. In emergency court papers seeking to block the deportation, Schroeder cited the administration’s aggressive effort to expel other foreigners under the Alien Enemies Act, and he argued that his own client might be unlawfully ensnared in that effort.

Schroeder succeeded for a couple of weeks, but the Trump administration is now arguing that he falsely claimed his client was facing deportation under that rarely invoked law — and that he persisted even after government lawyers explained the deportation was based on ordinary immigration law.…”

So, they're going to simply rig the Census data this time to favor red states at the expense of blue states to further cement their total control of government and try to make it permanent. Cool, cool.

I honestly think we're witnessing the long-term dismantling of American economic and technological superiority and we're just handing it to other countries on a silver platter. It won't show up for a number of years - not until after Dear Leader is gone from office (assuming he doesn't find a way to run again in 2028), but he and this administration will be the main cause of it.

Also top of mind is the extent of additional layoffs. Paramount had already cut 15% of its domestic workforce in 2024, adding additional layoffs earlier this year. While Ellison and his chief financial backer, RedBird Capital, have emphasized their passion for theatrical moviegoing and preserving many of Paramount’s traditional businesses, it’s clear that more changes are coming.

I've not been impressed at all by what I've seen so far of this company, and I do worry for the future of franchises like Star Trek under Skydance control. Hopefully they won't mess with or cut it too much. I've read that the reason Strange New Worlds (a great series, btw) was cancelled after season five was because of the "uncertainty" over this merger and Paramount's financial issues.

Yeah I am worried that the company will become a WH propaganda machine. Bracing for the day when I read a script and say I can't ethically work on this.

Indeed

I was an investor in a Chinese real estate company 7 years ago and followed China's transition to its clean energy policy which put restrictions on new real estate developments. My thought at the time was that China was way ahead of us in coming to terms with and adapting to the climate change reality.

I jokingly thought China had adopted the George Costanza philosophy for success and the strategy was look at what the USA is doing, then do the opposite. It seems like a sound strategy, not only when it comes to the environment, but geopolitics, as well.
