To me, this is really the secret sauce/genius/insidiousness of right-wing media. They've quite successfully sold the application of a double-standard as both a patriotic and a moral position.

I think it's more false imprisonment than kidnapping, but I could see the argument for both.

My wife's grandfather who was in seminary when WWII broke out, but left the war deeply devoted to being not-religious - went around in his final Alzheimer's years telling everyone he met how he went to church every Sunday of his life.
