I often ponder which right-wing dictatorship this regime has learned the most lessons from.
It seems that Trump and Orban have a warm relationship, and Trump's march to autocracy fits with Orban's elegant establishment of autocracy in Hungary.

I can imagine Trump calling Orban periodically for advice...

Trump: Hey Viktor it's Donald calling

Orban: How are things going since our last conservation ?

Trump: I think I'm making progress and appreciate your previous helpful advice

Orban: I'm glad to be of service

Trump: Following your advice, I now have loyal unthinking yes men in my administration this time around, neutering Congress, making some progress on neutering the judiciary, and have intimidated and instilled fear in those who would oppose me by initiating investigations to punish my political enemies.. Do you have any further advice what is left for me to do ?

Orban: I was successful in changing my country's Constitution, but I understand that doing so in your country will be a bit more complicated given what is necessary to do so. You have made more progress than I made at this early stage so take a break and rest on your laurels. Let's talk again in a month or two.

Trump : You are such a great friend and I appreciate what you are doing in your country, and thank you for your support as I continue to make our country more like yours

Yeah, I don't think this is a close call. MAGA desperately wants us to be Hungary.

"Mar-a-Lago calling," Orbán wrote on X, formerly Twitter. "Just had my first phone conversation with President @realDonaldTrump since the elections. We have big plans for the future!"

This seems on the nose...though I was racking my brain thinking on the National Security States of Latin America...the closest that I could get was Pinochet in Chile but Fujimori in Peru was an intriguing idea for comparison.

And of course we do have strong example of Nazi Germany as a primer for so many things that Project 2025 an trumpism desire.

Not sure if I read it here but someone floated the idea that MAGATs don’t really have a modern day equivalent of hardened WW1 vets like the Nazi party had. And without that they will not have the same success. Wishful thinking probably.

I was listening to Rachel Maddow's Ultra yesterday and the episode was about how the American far right got others to back a bunch of Nazi soldiers who executed American POWs after their Nazi lawyer at the Nuremberg trials made up stories of torture of the Nazis by Jewish American military police. It was all garbage, but the American right gleefully dove in to the misinformation. This was 1946. Americans dying at the hands of Germans were extremely fresh in their mind, and yet the hate-filled assholes got on board backing 100% genuine Nazis without a problem.

Rest assured, the success rate in modern America will be very high. A good chunk of the US lives on hatred and fear and desperately wants to eliminate their enemies.

I can no longer access Trump’s Truth Social posts without creating an account, and I refuse to sign up there, so henceforth I will be reliant on second hand confirmations of his posts. Like this one.

Judge Blocks Birthright Citizenship Executive Order Nationwide

“… Ruling from the bench, Judge Joseph N. Laplante of the U.S. District Court for the District of New Hampshire also allowed the case to proceed as a class action, applying his order nationwide to babies born to undocumented parents. After a recent Supreme Court decision limiting nationwide injunctions, lawsuits structured as class actions are effectively the only ones that can halt the president’s policies across broad sections of the country.

The Trump administration has fought to end the longstanding custom that people born in the United States are automatically citizens, regardless of their parents’ immigration status. Judge Laplante’s order ensures a new round of litigation and appeals.

The judge, an appointee of President George W. Bush, said he would issue a written order later in the day. He also stayed his order for seven days, allowing time for an appeal.

The lawsuit, brought by the A.C.L.U., was filed just hours after the Supreme Court’s ruling last month, testing what appeared to be the only remaining practical and efficient way for district court judges to freeze the implementation of policies they found unlawful….”

So ICE has 7 days to deport people they claim are not citizens because Trump unilaterally declared birthright citizenship inapplicable to children of migrants, I guess?

From the same link (a catch-all breaking Trump news link with multiple stories at NYT):

“… A former Justice Department lawyer accused the Trump administration of “thumbing its nose at the courts,” saying his former colleagues were being forced to choose between the president’s agenda and their ethical obligations as attorneys.

In an interview with The New York Times, the lawyer, Erez Reuveni, who filed a detailed whistle-blower claim to the Senate last month, shared his growing sense of alarm as he defended the administration’s aggressive deportation agenda. He said he was willing to testify to Congress or in court …

Mr. Reuveni, speaking publicly for the first time about his experiences, was fired in April after he appeared in court to defend the administration’s mistaken deportation of a man in Maryland, accused of refusing a superior’s directive.

…Although the administration’s approach has been broadly clear, Mr. Bove and his boss have denied the thrust of Mr. Reuveni’s account. But text messages, phone records and emails viewed by The Times appear to bolster the whistle-blower’s version of events, offering a behind-the-scenes recounting of private meetings and conversations that show Justice Department leaders pressing to take audacious legal risks….”

The Supreme Court opinion noted that the original order would be valid for 30 days from the date of decision. So this is well within that time frame. After seven days, the new order will take effect, replacing the old one.

Because the district courts are reacting with proper urgency (with negative support from the fuckers on SCOTUS), I don't think the administration can do this without getting a green light from the Supremes.

Playing God? Like when the government decides a woman should just die from her ectopic pregnancy instead of giving proper medical treatment? All in the name of God?
The number of diehard MAGAs on social media now claiming that all of this flooding around the country is "unnatural" and is being caused by cloud seeding and that our government secretly controls the weather (I saw a post on facebook from a woman claiming that this has been the case since 1946) is absurd. And anytime someone mentions climate change and global warming as the cause of growing flood events they immediately ridicule it and tell the person to "do their own research."

In their insane MAGA world believing that global warming is real is a step too far, but believing that our government (which is now controlled by Trump) has secretly had the power to control our weather for decades and is now causing all of these floods seems perfectly normal and reasonable to them. Whenever I wonder how in the hell enough Americans could believe that Trump was in any way fit to be POTUS to get him elected I see crap like this and it suddenly makes sense. The cloud seeding/government controls the weather is of course crazy talk, but that seems to be the conspiracy theory of the moment among right-wing MAGAs. They control every level and branch of the federal government, yet they persist in seeing themselves as the victims of the all-powerful sinister Deep State that's out to get them.

I don't think they are capable of understanding the world except as a plot. Their version of Christianity often posits that they are caught in a tug of war on Earth between Satan and God. They communicate in conspiracy theories. Their preferred form of knowledge is revelation, which is why they get caught up in all that bullshit. Truth comes from above, for them, not from using their minds.

What's the opposite of Occam's Razor? Because that's what our Pub friends are embracing now. The most unlikely (and unscientific) explanation is the most plausible.
