Romania could be next to elect a right-wing populist: What to know

George Simion suggests Romania, a member of the European Union and NATO, should stop aiding Ukraine. Ukraine considers him a national security threat.

“… What kind of country should Romania become? More like MAGA America or Viktor Orban’s Hungary, or something more acceptable to the bureaucrats in Brussels?

Vice President JD Vance has opinions.

The atmosphere grew so chaotic that the constitutional court annulled November’s presidential election over campaign finance violations and an illicit social media campaign stoked by the Russians.

It’s the kind of thing that’s not supposed to happen in the European Union in 2025.

… The contest is between the centrist mayor of Bucharest, 55-year-old Nicusor Dan, a former mathematician and intellectual running as an independent, and the right-wing firebrand nationalist George Simion, 38, who has embraced Donald Trump’s MAGA movement with a Balkan spin — his promise is to “make Romania great again.” …”

I thought the video of the Mexican ship hitting the bridge was AI at first. Wild.

Also, the Palm Springs bomber’s information is out there and his online trail is wild. Describes himself as a pro-mortalist, anti-natalist, anti-sex vegan. Basically thinks that existence is defined as suffering so death is more humane than continuing to live (or being born in the first place). Too bad he didn’t just become a Buddhist.

“… Staten’s complaint is one of hundreds impacted by a major retreat in the federal government’s decadeslong fight against housing discrimination and segregation, according to interviews with 10 HUD officials. Those federal staffers, along with state officials, attorneys and advocates across the country, described a dismantling of federal fair housing enforcement, which has been slowed, constrained or halted at every step. The investigative process has been hobbled. The agency is withholding discrimination charges that HUD officials say should already have been issued.

Those accused of housing discrimination appear newly emboldened not to cooperate with the agency. And at least 115 federal fair housing cases have been halted or closed entirely since Trump took office, with hundreds more cases in jeopardy, HUD officials estimate. …”

At Least 27 Dead After Tornadoes and Storms Tear Across Central U.S.

In Missouri and Kentucky alone, tornadoes killed at least 25 people, officials said. The spring storm season has been a brutal one for the region.

Can you blame Pope Leo? JD Vance murdered the last Pope he spoke with.

Romanian centrist Dan poised to win presidency over hard-right rival

Moderate Nicușor Dan wins Romanian election — but ultranationalist George Simion won’t concede

The 55-year-old Bucharest mayor fended off a challenge from firebrand candidate who models himself on U.S. leader Donald Trump.

“… With 98 percent of polling stations counted by 11:55 p.m. local time Sunday, Dan had won 54 percent to 46 percent for Simion. Turnout was 65 percent, the highest since 1996.

… Dan, 55, has the air of an academic and was a talented mathematician before entering politics. Standing as an independent, his softly spoken style could not be more different from the bombastic nationalism of Simion, his 38-year-old opponent from the hard-right AUR party, who has vowed to halt aid to Ukraine.

While voting was still underway, Simion began questioning the legitimacy of the vote — and he even claimed victory on Sunday night, despite the clear exit poll margin and results so far going against him.

“I am the new president of Romania,” Simion insisted in a social media post. In his first live statement after the polls closed, Simion claimed his party estimates that he won at least 400,000 votes more than Dan.

Simion’s approach recalls Donald Trump’s refusal to accept defeat after the 2020 U.S. election. At 10:30 p.m., members of Simion’s party received a message alert telling them if the “fraud continues, protest” and proposing a “national protest” on Monday morning “if they try to steal the victory of the Romanian people,” according to Romanian media. …”

Another case of Trump association with a far right candidate outside the United States seeming to radically shift prior polling away from the Trump-associated candidate.

That’s a good result.
