World Scientists Look Elsewhere as U.S. Labs Stagger Under Trump Cuts​

With the welcome mat withdrawn for promising researchers from around the world, America is at risk of losing its longstanding pre-eminence in the sciences.


“… As the Trump administration moves with abandon to deny visas, expel foreign students and slash spending on research, scientists in the United States are becoming increasingly alarmed. The global supremacy that the United States has long enjoyed in health, biology, the physical sciences and other fields, they warn, may be coming to an end.

“If things continue as they are, American science is ruined,” said David W. Hogg, a professor of physics and data science at New York University who works closely with astronomers and other experts around the world. “If it becomes impossible to work with non-U.S. scientists,” he said, “it would basically render the kinds of research that I do impossible.”

… . At Johns Hopkins University, a bastion of scientific research, officials announced the layoffs of more than 2,000 people after losing $800 million in government grants. An analysis by The New York Timesfound that the National Science Foundation, the world’s pre-eminent funding agency in the physical sciences, has been issuing financing for new grants at its slowest rate since at least 1990….”

Hey MAGA: You know how Doge found like $3B of cuts? Trump is going to put $25B in the hands of Musk next year for the "Golden Dome." They think you are fucking idiots. They think they can distract you with shiny objects and pick your pockets.

The price tag estimate on the Golden Dome is at least $500B. At least. In all likelihood, it's well over $1T. It also requires Canadian cooperation, which will not be forthcoming under Trump, I would imagine. This is the public policy equivalent of the Cybertruck: it's incredibly stupid, overpriced, does nothing, and will cost us an incredible amount of money.

We had a UNC student president candidate back in my day who ran with his dog Sarge on a platform that included building a dome over the campus so students would not have to go to class in the rain.

My daughter who is a UNC masters of public health had a grant for the state of Nevada held up in review because it mentioned female mosquitoes as part of a vector of disease study. Of course female mosquitoes are the only ones that actually carry the disease. It's just unbelievable how stupid this administration is about literally everything.

I don't understand his points. If the things he post are true, then they are outliers and should be handled as such. These things are not happening to the extent that the right pretends they do.

And Stephen Miller if a fucked up individual and he went to dook. 😁

Miller is probably silence's idol, considering they both seem to get so much joy out of the suffering of others, especially others with brown skin from south of the border.

If either actually cared about comprehensive border policy that works for all involved then they would be questioning why Dictator Trump thinks everything is done via EO instead of actual laws and policy.
