yeah, this. i think we were all sorta like "well at least she has some experience in a role that prepares her for the job....." but it was in florida which is a lawless backwoods disaster nightmare.

and of course, she's awful.

And there was no real grounds to oppose, given that she had the qualifications. That we had a strong hunch she was going to be like this isn't really a cogent grounds for opposition.

People across north Georgia and parts of North Carolina and South Carolina reported seeing the meteor, smoke trailing its descent. A boom around 12.30pm rattled houses across metro Atlanta.…”

It is a little terrifying that, at any point, earth could travel into a life-ending rock that we never saw coming. We have to bank a lot on just how empty space is and not think about it very much.

Here's what one that they estimated was 6-9 miles wide did to life on earth 65 million years ago.



Scientists refer to the major extinction that wiped out non-avian dinosaurs as the K-T extinction, because it happened at the end of the Cretaceous period and the beginning of the Tertiary period. Why not C-T? Geologists use "K" as a shorthand for Cretaceous. "C" is shorthand for an earlier period, the Cambrian.

The extinction that occurred 65 million years ago wiped out some 50 percent of plants and animals. The event is so striking that it signals a major turning point in Earth's history, marking the end of the geologic period known as the Cretaceous and the beginning of the Tertiary period.

Fwiw, There's been 4 other major extinction events of various and sundry causes of which a couple have wiped out a greater percentage of species.

I’m early 60’s.

I’ve spent ZERO time fretting over a meteor hitting Earth and causing an extinction event.

I’ve spent a good amount of time worrying that humans would kill billions of humans.

Odds are your apocalyptic scenario will come true before mine. But at least yours will have a little bit of warning first -- even if just a few minutes.

I’m betting on a long, slow (100-500 years) eradication of billions of humans as large parts of the inhabited earth become uninhabitable due to climate change……although, if the theory about the Atlantic Ocean conveyor belt is true, it’ll happen faster…..

I doubt climate change will kill all humans…….as individuals or in small groups, we’re smart, adaptable, creative, etc. In large groups*, we’re stupid

*large is a hard number to define. 500-1,000?
