I made a long Covid comment, before realizing the article is old
 
Scanning the SSA data, disability payments peaked in the years following the Great Recession and have trended down since.

A key detail from the older NPR report is that while states have to pay a chunk toward folks on welfare, they do not cover any costs of folks on disability. So the states have a strong motivation to nudge people into disability claims (including a business to help do that).

I genuinely cannot imagine saying this (except under extreme duress) and cannot imagine thinking anyone would say it.

Honestly, it's the kind of thing that dictators like North Korea's Kim Jong Un would force public officials to say. Praise Dear Leader relentlessly in public, or else your career is destroyed and you will perhaps face imprisonment or worse. There is simply no doubt that he wants every elected official in the country to publicly kiss his ass and tell him how wonderful and great and brilliant he is 24/7, or else. Which in no way is the sign of a democracy or even a republic.
 


Hitler did a quick victory drive through Paris, which was plenty shocking to most Europeans, but not a speech at the Eiffel Tower.
 


Pretty sure what “paid for by me” means to Trump is donations from others to pay for the parade that otherwise could have been paid to him, his businesses and/or his family, not Trump cutting a meaningful check to cover his birthday parade.
