FEMA chief is fired

Federal Emergency Management Agency acting Administrator Cameron Hamilton told people he was terminated Thursday.

“… Cameron Hamilton, FEMA’s acting administrator, has told people that he was terminated, leaving the nation’s disaster agency without a top official three weeks before the start of the Atlantic hurricane season and as Congress scrutinizes FEMA’s proposed budget for fiscal 2026.

Hamilton was summoned to Department of Homeland Security headquarters in Washington on Thursday morning and told of his termination by Deputy Homeland Security Secretary Troy Edgar and Corey Lewandowski, a longtime adviser to President Donald Trump, according to a person with direct knowledge.

… The firing occurred one day after Hamilton told a House Appropriations subcommittee that the nation needs FEMA, which Trump has suggested abolishing or shrinking.

“I do not believe it is in the best interests of the American people to eliminate the Federal Emergency Management Agency,” Hamilton said at the hearing.”

“… Cameron Hamilton, who was appointed by President Donald Trump, was escorted out of FEMA’s headquarters on Thursday, according to multiple sources familiar with the situation.

… For months, both Trump and Noem, whose Department of Homeland Security oversees FEMA, have called for the agency to be “eliminated.” On Tuesday, Noem reaffirmed that stance when she took questions from the same House committee.

“President Trump has been very clear since the beginning that he believes that FEMA and its response in many, many circumstances has failed the American people, and that FEMA, as it exists today, should be eliminated in empowering states to respond to disasters with federal government support.” Noem told the committee.

Hamilton struck a starkly different tone in his testimony. He repeatedly praised FEMA’s staff – calling them “one of the greatest workforces in the entire federal government” – stressing that his goal is to cut bureaucratic red tape and refocus the agency and its budget on its core mission of delivering assistance to survivors after only the most devastating natural disasters, shifting responsibility for smaller disasters onto the states.

“The (FEMA) workforce is tremendous and amazing, and they do a lot of great work, but there’s also systems and processes that are completely antiquated and have to be improved.” Hamilton said.

“FEMA is all too often used by states and public officials as a financial backstop for routine issues that frankly should be handled locally. This misalignment has fostered a culture of dependency, waste, inefficiency, while also delaying crucial aid to Americans who are in genuine need.”

CNN previously reported that Hamilton was given a lie detector test just days after taking part in a meeting with top DHS officials for a policy discussion on the future of FEMA and how to potentially dismantle the agency. That closed-door meeting was reported by CNN and other media outlets. At least a dozen other FEMA officials have also been polygraphed by DHS in recent weeks, primarily for alleged media leaks.“

Isn't that what Trump was found liable for doing ?

If she is found liable then I hope she suffers the exact same consequences as Trump ... oh wait, that would mean no consequences.
NY's giving her a $10M slush fund to cover her legal bills even though the allegations have nothing to do with her duties as AG.

seems to be, as I suspected, much ado about nothing beyond Trump and his henchmen seeking retribution...

Finally, the GQP led House is passing meaningful legislation that will improve the lives of working and middle class American families...
We have to reestablish our respect in the world, after four years of the autopen. Only after we write our name on every surface, like a four year old with a marker set, can we set the foundation for working and middle class policy.

"Taxpayers could be on the hook for New York Attorney General Letitia James' legal bills during Justice Department probes into her alleged fraudulent real estate dealings."

"Albany Democrats are expected to sign off on a provision allowing certain officials to tap into a $10 million fund to cover 'any reasonable attorneys' fees and expenses incurred' - even as part of probes not directed related to their state employment."

"The language is being slipped into New York's operations budget bill - one of several expected to be made public and voted on starting Wednesday as the Legislature moves to pass next year's fiscal plan."

"could be" doing a lot of work there.

It's not a slush fund. It applies to any prosecution of any official as a result of their service. Which is to say, NY will be covering political persecution, as well it should. It removes one lever of power that the administration would seek to use.

I'd bet money that the motivation for this law wasn't Letitia James but the corrupt Eric Adams deal.

So not giving Letitia a $10M slush fund... Thanks for correcting your previous post

I don't know. I think the fund would cover her. It's the characterization of this as some sort of slush fund or corruption. Here's the situation:

Trump: Tish James, either you apologize to me and adopt my immigration priorities or I will have you investigated
Tish: For what?
Trump: For something. What's your nest egg look like? How many lawyers can you buy.

And now: NY has a choice as to what happens next. If NY says, "we'll reimburse you," the next line is:

Tish: My legal bills are covered, asshole. Go fuck yourself.

But without such protection, the next line might be:

Tish: I'm sorry for what I did, sir.

I don't have any issue with the state of NY's choice here.
