I saw another article recently where a data center in opening in Utah that will use more power than the entire state does right now. How in the hell is that not going to crash power grids and drastically drive up power bills for people? If this is the glorious future that AI is bringing to us then maybe we need to do some more serious evaluations of it. But of course we won't, because the high tech companies pushing it are the same ones that currently control much of our political process via campaign funding and lobbying, and they're determined to ram this down everyone's throats whether they (and we) want it or not.

The solution isn't less AI.

It's a better power grid and more wind/solar power.

Many of these mega data centers are building their own power supply — mostly natural gas and battery backup systems that store energy from the grid during low use times, though there is also nuclear power development underway.
