CURRENT EVENTS — NOVEMBER

It appears that the Trump Administration has reinterpreted a SNAP rule prohibiting stores that accept SnAP from offering discounts to customers who pay in cash (so charging SNAP recipients more for the same groceries than cash-paying customers) to also mean that grocery stores cannot offer discounts to SNAP recipients now while SNAP benefits are withheld of delayed during the shutdown.

SNAP Update: USDA Tells Grocery Stores Not to Give Discounts to Customers

“The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has told grocery stores not to give special discounts to around 42 million Americans who use food stamps.

… USDA emailed grocery stores around the country telling them not to offer special discounts or deals to SNAP recipients amid the freeze, warning that doing so would violate the program’s “Equal Treatment Rule.”

That rule requires stores to sell eligible food items to SNAP-EBT customers at the same prices and under the same conditions as other shoppers.

The email said: “Offering discounts or services only to SNAP-eligible customers is a SNAP violation unless you have a SNAP equal treatment waiver.” …”

Beshear said he was warned Kentucky would be sued if the commonwealth stepped in to take over SNAP payments. Almost as if they want people to die to reduce the numbers.

Instacart, DoorDash, Gopuff among companies offering discounts to SNAP recipients

“Instacart said Friday it will offer customers who receive SNAP benefits 50% on their next grocery order to ease strain as the government prepares to cut off food aid payments.

Instacart said any customer who placed an order in October using a SNAP/EBT card will be eligible for the discount, which will be available even if the government makes the payments as planned on Nov. 1. Instacart said it is also expanding the number of food banks it supports through online food drives from 100 to 300.

The San Francisco-based grocery delivery company said both programs amount to $5 million in direct relief.…

… Gopuff, a Philadelphia-based company that provides fast delivery of food and other convenience items, said it will provide $50 worth of free groceries in November to customers who have a SNAP/EBT card connected to their Gopuff account. Gopuff said it will spend up to $10 million on the program.

DoorDash said it would waive service and delivery fees for an estimated 300,000 orders for SNAP recipients in November. DoorDash said Friday that 25 grocery companies, including Sprouts, Dollar General, Giant Eagle, Stop & Shop, Winn-Dixie, BJ’s Wholesale Club and ShopRite, are partnering with DoorDash to cut those fees.

DoorDash said it would also deliver 1 million meals from food banks for free. The company said more than 2.4 million of its customers have a SNAP/EBT card linked to their DoorDash account.…”

Not sure if USDA will claim the delivery discounts are also prohibited by a rule meant to protect SNAp from grocers who charged more for groceries paid for with SNAP.

I found it so hard to believe, I went to the USDA.gov page.

Correct. Women's sports are for females and men's sports are for males.

Men's and women's sports were separated decades ago for a reason. A scientifically based reason.

Remember when Democrats were all about the science?
I completely agree that women’s sports are for females and men’s sports are for males. And I know you know this, but it’s not just the notion of protecting the sanctity of women’s sports that cause Republicans to treat transgender people so horribly. If it were only about sports, there wouldn’t be all of the other anti-LGBTQ hysteria emanating from the right wing. But again, I know you know this. We all know this.

This propaganda campaign certainly seems to be working for their MAGA base - I've seen posts similar to this all over Facebook and other social media like Twitter over the past week or so. It's become a common MAGA, Trumper talking point - the shutdown is all the Democrat's fault, not the GOP's. It's the Democrats who want to cut SNAP and Obamacare subsidies and let people starve, not the Republicans. And their base just eats this crap up. A tiny sampling of Facebook posts I've seen - "So the democrats should have voted yes when they had 13 chances", "Once again republicans getting blamed when Schumer rejected 13 times for the opening, you liberals always saying it’s trumps fault on everything, the democrats are at fault on this one", "13 no votes by Democrats. They hope you forget", and on and on and on. And no doubt this blatant propaganda on official government websites is helping to spread their message to their always gullible, always credulous base.

“… The previously undisclosed document does not cite any evolving science. Rather, it relies on an order that President Donald Trump issued on his first day in office titled: “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government.”

An agency spokesperson confirmed the change.

“As of Sept. 30, the department no longer presumes service connection for male breast cancer,” press secretary Pete Kasperowicz wrote in a statement to ProPublica. He noted that veterans who’ve previously qualified for coverage can keep it.

But for the roughly 100 male veterans who are newly diagnosed each year, the path will now be significantly harder. They will have to show their cancer was connected to their military service, a burden that has often been hard to meet.

Without VA coverage, experts say, veterans’ care could be delayed or even missed altogether — even as research has shown the rate of breast cancer among men has been increasing and the disease is deadlier than for women. One study also found that breast cancer for men is “notably higher among veterans.”

… The administration’s new policy rolls back benefits that were created under the Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics, or PACT, Act, a Biden-era law that ushered in one of the largest expansions of health care and benefits in VA history….”

“… The PACT Act gives administrations widespread discretion to cover diseases as science develops. Last year, the VA added three cancers, including male breast cancer.

The law states that “reproductive cancer of any type” be covered. Officials added male breast cancer under that category after a working group of experts reviewed the science. The decision noted “the marked similarity of male and female breast cancer.”

The Trump administration’s memo argues that designation is a mistake. “The Biden Administration falsely classified male breasts as reproductive organs,” Kasperowicz said in his statement to ProPublica.

A former official who was involved in the VA’s decision last year said that while there were discussions about how to interpret “reproductive cancer,” the scientific consensus among VA oncologists was clear.

“The evidence showed that male and female breast tissue respond similarly to toxic exposures and share nearly identical biological and mutational profiles,” said the former official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, citing concern for his job prospects in government. “Expanding coverage to male breast cancer was the right call.”…”
