Friends in Charlotte check in please. Just how 'bad' is it?

"Reps. Mark Harris, Pat Harrigan and Chuck Edwards criticized Stein for 'refusing' a request from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Fraternal Order of Police to call in the Guard...'The situation in our state's largest city has become increasingly dire,' the lawmakers wrote, citing several recent violent incidents and statistics from the police union. 'The men and women who wear the badge in Charlotte have sounded an unmistakable cry for help.'"

It's rough. I saw two squirrels getting it on -- UNPROTECTED!!!! -- when I was walking down Tryon this morning to get my venti Caramel Crunch Frappuccino with a caramel-lined cup, a double shot of espresso, 5 pumps of vanilla syrup, 3 pumps of caramel syrup, 3 pumps of dark caramel syrup, 5 pumps of white mocha sauce, 5 scoops of vanilla bean powder, almond milk, double-blended, light whip, extra caramel drizzle, extra cookie crumble toppings, and extra caramel crunch toppings. Almost made me scuff the toe of my Gucci 1953s. Fortunately, one of the homeless guys grabbed my arm to steady me before I fell on the marble sidewalk outside the Blumenthal Center, which had just been polished to a high shine -- WITH NO WARNING CONES!!!! I gave him a couple Benjamins for the assist, but that won't get him far at the Sweetgreen that just opened up and has a line out the door at lunch.

I, for one, welcome the National Guard. It's a war zone here.

No one likes crime, and it would be nice if it didn’t exist at all. Yet the perception doesn’t match the reality. Compared to last year, overall crime is down and violent crime is down fairly significantly.

Violent crime has decreased significantly since the 1990s. In 1993, the violent crime rate was 79.8 victimizations (including simple assault) per 1,000 people. In 2024, it was 23.3. Excluding simple assault, those numbers were 29.1 in 1993 and 8.9 in 2024. Thus, the violent crime rate in 2024 was less than one-third of what it was in 1993, and it’s currently about 20% less than it was in 2024, yet people didn’t seem as scared of crime back in the 1990s. The decline over the past ~35 years looks like this (blue line is crime rate per 100k people, green line is population growth):

If these people really cared about reducing violent crime, then they would use their positions to help reduce and limit both the accessibility and abundance of firearms, but they consistently fight against any efforts to do that.

It was amusing when Trump was asked about Marjorie Taylor Green's change. He was a bit puzzled about it too. But its not hard to see that she's maneuvering and just getting an early start on some other Republicans.

She's calculated that there is a place for the "kinder gentler MAGA". If she can grab that space, then she thinks she can take over the movement when Trump recedes, or even run for President. Pretty brilliant move on her part because you really can't out Trump in that lane. And a "kinder gentler MAGA", totally out flanks the folks like J.D. who is tied to the Trump bull xxxx.

I live outside of Charlotte, but I've been there a few times recently.

There are a lot of dumbasses who really suck at driving in Charlotte. If the National Guard would be deployed to either give out traffic tickets or to blow up the cars of the offending drivers, I could be convinced to support this measure.
