I heard two different families having tense conversations about prices and choices at the grocery store on Sunday afternoon that seem to vibrate on the same frequency as this guest column.

I feel bad for that gentleman and his family, I hope they find the resources they need.

But he's also part of the problem because he's full of shit. Specifically, this part...

"This isn't about Red or Blue. It's about the fact that we're being divided against each other while both sides forget that real Americans bleed the same when the cost of insulin triples or the cost of groceries goes up again."

It is totally about "Red" & "Blue". The programs he lauds that help him and his family and the programs he desires to help them more have been and will only be provided in the future by Blue. Red, on the other hand, specifically sets out to destroy those programs or to make sure they're never created in the first place. Blue wants to provide him with resources and opportunities, Red wants to take those resources and opportunities away.

While I feel bad for him and his family, it's hard not to see in that letter the very reason he's in the situation he's in.

just another brick in the autocratic wall being constructed, a wall America will pay for...

Republicans must genuinely want to cull the herd. Culture war can’t be the only explanation for blatantly poisoning our air, water, and soils, while concurrently gutting research into the most promising anti: cancer, viral, and autoimmune technology we’ve ever discovered.

You might be right. I genuinely believe a big part of what drives their anti-immigration agenda and building walls is that they know full well that climate change is real and driving mass migration. I can’t quite square the desire to accelerate climate change that’s driving migration, but I guess it’s just plain ol’ greed.

I guess an attempt to cull the herd as they push to crank up birth rate is also at odds.

It’s so hard for me to make sense of the shit they do. Maybe I’m a little slow or maybe you need to be an evil, greedy asshole to really get it.

You might be slow on the uptake, but not because you’re slow.

I suspect you orient in a pro-social, humanistic manner. You think it’s inherent to humanity to seek cooperation and to build systems of support that ensure the well being, autonomy, and survival of all peoples thrust into this world against their will. It’s seems anathema to pursue policies and systems that create chaos and destruction of human potential.

I suspect you find yourself baffled that humans haven’t integrated all the obvious lessons from historical spasms like Genghis Khan, bubonic plague, the inquisition, genocide of the native Americans, 1918 Spanish Flu (didn’t start in Spain), 1933/1938, the Rape of Nanking, Covid, etc. In that bafflement, you can’t help but give benefit of doubt, after doubt, after doubt … bc you seek understanding and knowledge. Bc you see people as generally seeking well being, and if something is so irrational to your understanding of well being, you assume you must be missing something - anything - even a shred of new information that could explain the rationality behind what appears to you as objectively irrational and antisocial.

You can’t integrate the reality that an astonishing percentage of humanity has deep desire to inflict cruelty and regression, merely to hoard resources, protect internalized tribal identity, and shield fragile egos. You give a shit about people, writ large, and their ability to live with less suffering, vs some concocted survival of the fittest and tribal warfare trope.

Or, I could be way off base and just projecting.
