“…Former presidents receive Secret Service protection for life. Harris, as a former vice president, received six months of protection after leaving office, according to federal law. That period ended on July 21. However, her protection had been extended for an additional year via a directive – not made public until now – signed by then-President Joe Biden shortly before leaving office, according to multiple people familiar with the undisclosed arrangement.

That is the order Trump canceled in his letter, titled “Memorandum for the Secretary of Homeland Security” and dated Thursday.

… But what will now disappear is not just the agents assigned to guard her in person, 24-7: Secret Service protection includes constant analysis of threat intelligence and covering in-person situations, emails, texts and social media. With her detail canceled, Harris aides are worried they will lose the same access to threat warnings, the people familiar with her security operations said. Her home, in the middle of Los Angeles, will also stop being protected by federal agents.…”

Perhaps when President Newsom takes over in 2029, he can sign an executive order that past presidents with felony convictions to their name do not qualify for protection.

The day this sack of shit leaves office, the Secret Service protection for his entire family needs to be revoked.

Of greater relevance is our Founders' love of classical architecture (Roman and Greek) and their belief that classical designs were an inspiration for the new American Republic and connected it to antiquity by embodying principles like civic virtue, order and noble simplicity.

George Washington and Thomas Jefferson intentionally modeled key buildings in DC on the classical architecture of ancient Athens and Rome. The US Capitol is based on a Roman Temple.
Do you listen to rock and roll? Or any blues-derived music, like jazz or hip-hop? What about low culture derived forms (e.g. bluegrass, which was never played at the royal court)? Or is it all Mozart for you, all the time?

Why or why not?

Do think that maybe there's an ideological component to the authoritarian fetish for classical visual forms? That maybe the elite planters cherished their roman and greek inspirations as a show of virtue and intellectual superiority, since the average peasant was not at all versed in the architecture of antiquity? I mean, look at what music Trump likes. It's pretty fucking far from principles like civic virtue.

And do you think it's a coincidence that someone as politically conservative as you also cherishes the classical form? I do not. In fact, I think it explains quite a lot -- not directly, but there's a correlation because your aesthetics and your politics derive from the same source.

Do you think it's a coincidence that I find Greek and Roman architecture to be boring, along with most pre-modernist visual art? I don't think so. I think I love Jackson Pollack or Gerhard Richter for reasons that are quite related to my personal views and intellectual style.

I hear you, but that's one thing I'll disagree about. Trump 1.0 was the worst president in the history of the republic BY FAR. Trump 2.0 has been immeasurably worse. But the last thing we want or need is violence against a current or former president. So if we somehow end up in a situation where (a) Trump gives up the presidency in January 2029, and (b) he is still alive, I have no issue paying to protect him for what I hope will be a short remainder of his life. We need to fight fire with fire, but not on EVERYTHING.

Nah. I'd rather just remove the problem, like they did with the Romanovs.
i’d argue the Romanovs weren’t actually a problem, just a possible future nuisance. I don’t think the Whites would have used them as a rallying cry at all- probably would have backfired. Trump will be far more of an issue

I will start a thread about this sometime, but I think economics disagrees. I mean, maybe if you want to limit it to the specific issue of SS protection, it's probably fine. But in general, I think we live in an infinite period prisoner's dilemma (well, not infinite but it can be modeled that way) and there's a specific strategy that needs to be followed to reach the optimal result.

I wasn't as clear as I intended. I really meant eliminating the protection for Junior, Eric, et al.

I like classical architecture for state and federal buildings. Otherwise, I enjoy many different architectural styles and art. One of my interests is art history (post impressionists and cubists are favs). I appreciate all types of music but my favorite genres are classic rock, first wave punk, 1980s and 1990s alternative rock and broadway musicals. Are all my interests authoritarian?

They wouldn't normally get protection, would they? I honestly don't know. Did they get protection in 2021?

Talking SS protection, of course. I would be stunned if anyone with the Trump surname has ever used "protection."

If those are in fact your interests, no. Though I don't like much classic rock, I think it would be unfair to label it authoritarian per se. I shouldn't have said you specifically, as I was talking about a correlation, which is invalid to apply in specific instances. Also, your politics are not necessarily strongly authoritarian . That you apologize for authoritarianism doesn't necessarily mean you'd be whispering in Trump's ear like Stephen Miller.

But let's focus on the topic at hand. Why do you reject non-classical forms for state and federal buildings? Do you think that's connected to your political beliefs?
