There were no such portraits at Prettyman when I was clerking.
What year was that?

I expect things have changed.

In 1978, when I started to drive, there were no signs at the state line proclaiming who is Governor.

I don’t remember the year that BS began. It is BS.

I can't vouch for every federal courthouse, but I see them regularly in all the CD Cal courthouses and it has always freaked me out.
Yeah, they’re in all the NC federal courthouses and in the US Attorney’s Office for WDNC (I assume they’re in the other ones as well). Been that way since I started practicing during the GWB admin and I understand it was like that during the Clinton administration before it. Not sure when it started but probably dates back a long time.

I'm not doubting you. I'm just passing along information. Either it's not everywhere, or the policy began in the later Bush years or Obama years.

Or it is not uniform. I have a vague memory of the Clinton photo (the creepy one that Conan used for all of Clinton bits with the fake mouth) staring at me every time I went through the metal detector in the 1990s.

I never understood why the federal government would want to personify its leadership. It seems very antithetical to our values.

Can't wait for another 6-3 or 5-4 decision overturning the lower court rulings in which the Supremes give even more unchecked power to our new Unitary Executive. Well, unchecked until a Democrat wins the presidency (which may never happen again at this point), in which case I'm sure the 6 GOP justices will suddenly rediscover the virtues of checks and balances and limitations on executive power and start blocking most of what that president wants to do.
