“… They referred to Black people as monkeys and “the watermelon people” and mused about putting their political opponents in gas chambers. They talked about raping their enemies and driving them to suicide and lauded Republicans who they believed support slavery.

… William Hendrix, the Kansas Young Republicans’ vice chair, used the words “n--ga” and “n--guh,” variations of a racial slur, more than a dozen times in the chat. Bobby Walker, the vice chair of the New York State Young Republicans at the time, referred to rape as “epic.” Peter Giunta, who at the time was chair of the same organization, wrote in a message sent in June that “everyone that votes no is going to the gas chamber.”

… “Can we fix the showers? Gas chambers don’t fit the Hitler aesthetic,” Joe Maligno, who previously identified himself as the general counsel for the New York State Young Republicans, wrote back.

… “I’m ready to watch people burn now,” Annie Kaykaty, New York’s national committeewoman, said.

The exchange is part of a trove of Telegram chats — obtained by POLITICO and spanning more than seven months of messages among Young Republican leaders in New York, Kansas, Arizona and Vermont. The chat offers an unfiltered look at how a new generation of GOP activists talk when they think no one is listening.…”

They talk exactly like the previous generation of republicans talked that I grew up around (in KS). These people are of course magats now. Funny how that works.

ETA: since Medhi’s post was added after my post I’d reply that it has nothing to do with “these days”. It’s always been like this. I posted awhile back that people would be shocked to know how lots of pubs talk around each other when they think only good white folk are listening. I assure you the ramcallas know people that speak like this and likely participate themselves.

I’d expect plenty of “lighten up, it’s just jokes” to be used by the people that know how prevalent this kind of rhetoric is.

I was in the young republicans in high school (‘03-‘07, vice president in ‘07), when “f—t” and “retarded” were starting to get frowned upon but still pretty commonplace and we never, ever used those. Much less the n-word. I can say that with 100% certainty.

Of those that I’ve kept up with, most of us are libs now. Some are extremely devout Christians and probably still very conservative, but at least aren’t obnoxiously maga on social media.

This really deserves its own thread.

Also, I'd like to state for the record that I am very much a watermelon person. I love watermelon. It has to be a good watermelon -- watermelon has a pretty high variance -- but a crisp, sweet juicy watermelon! Delicious and nutritious.

Watermelon and fried chicken always struck me as such a weird racist trope. I mean, those are two extremely popular foods (especially the latter)! One would expect them to focus on chitlins and collards but I guess that requires knowing something about black culture, lol.
