I am incredibly skeptical of social science studies that are based on self-reporting. To some degree, most social science research is based on surveys, but there are better or worse types of surveys. Asking people whether they are depressed is a very bad type of survey. A lot of the most depressed people refuse to acknowledge their depression (hence their continued depression/lack of treatment).
