From what I've read, it's not a stand-alone base, it's a facility within an existing AF base and we've done this with other countries where we share military planning, expertise, and training.

That said, this kind of arrangement with Qatar is absolutely unbelievable and, even within the absolute insanity of the Trump administration, I'm pretty shocked this agreement has been made.
My understanding is that while yes, we have hosted training sessions for Allied nations, we have never had a permanent facility built for just one nation. Correct that the facility will be on an existing Air Force Base, but it will be allocated for Qatari use only— which is pretty shocking.

And where are those facilities located? In the US, like the place in Georgia that trained contras? Or outside the US?

I know that the Singaporean AF also trains on a permanent basis at Mountain Home AF Base, where the Qatari facility will be. I would imagine that the Singaporean AF requires buildings for their planes and folks, although I can't find whether their operations are separate from or integrated within the US buildings.

To me, the building itself isn't a big issue. I mean, it's on our military base and it's not like we wouldn't be able to know what was happening in or get into (or even destroy) the building if we wanted. The problem is that we're partnering with Qatar, which is not a trustworthy partner in really any sense, but particularly not a country I'd want a military alliance with.

I just want to circle back to one of the few things not highlighted in that fucking absurd word salad, but Trump’s threats to use American monopolies to muscle other world powers concerns the absolute shit out of me, particularly as our biggest monopoly right now - in conjunction with Elon Musk - is satellites.

I agree with Laura. LOL

I really cant believe that's something that is happening. Mind blowing.
Just as with his first term in office, Trump always has some unexpected, scandalous surprises up his sleeve. Every reasonable person who was paying attention knew he was going to do lots of terrible, illegal things if he was reelected because he flat out told us he was going to during his campaign. He hasn't disappointed in that regard but few, if any, could have foreseen shit like this Qatari military base on American soil or the Trump administration strong arming their way into the federal government taking ownership stakes in private companies (sOcIaLiSm!!). MAGA would be screeching in disapproval had a Democratic President carried out these actions, but they're A-OK with Trump doing it because it's a cult.

We do not have a monopoly on satellites. Not even close.

I have to think this development will poll in the single digits. Maybe it will get close to 20 because almost nothing polls in single digits. I can't see this being popular at all.

ChatGPT says the Singapore AF just trains there and has some planes there, but not its own dedicated facility.

This Qatar thing looks like it will turn the base into a "joint campus" in the AI's words. They are planning to build stuff like classrooms, long term housing, etc. This isn't "top gun for some hotshot young pilots." This is "people who live and work on the base for an extended period of time."
