I would prefer first starting with the country. My most sincere hope is that if a sane POTUS ever assumes the office again, they rip this fucking ballroom down on day 1 and begin a meticulous restoration of the premises to pre Trump conditions.
I agree. Having a reasonably sized, architecturally appropriate ballroom at the White House is not a crazy idea. But as you say, it will most assuredly be an abomination while also not going through any of the required review process. Not to mention the cost and where the money is coming from...On the list of things to be shocked, outraged and offended by, this is pretty far down, which is sad.I continue to think the addition of a large formal gathering space to the White House grounds is a good idea. It's ridiculous that we host state events in tents. This shit show is a great example of one of Trump's worst characteristics. Even when he's pursuing a good goal, he does it in the most reckless, lawless, corrupt, and self-aggrandizing way possible. A space like this should be funded by Congress, not by favor-seekers. It should be designed and vetted by actual architects and preservationists. It should be made as timeless and functional as possible. Instead, we're going to get something akin to the Administration Building at the 1893 World's Fair.

Both can happen at once. Symbolism is important. Action is equally so.I would prefer first starting with the country.
Agree with your last comment, but it's interesting which stories catch the public's attention and sway the direction of our politics. This one seems to be getting a lot of traction right now and it's overwhelmingly negative for Trump. It may not last, but let's see how it plays out. I'm curious.I agree. Agreed. Reagan's removal of solar panels from the White House immediately after taking office set Republican's slavish worship of Big Oil and abhorrence of alternative energy to this day. After seeing how badly that worked out in dividing the country and creating dangerous alliances in bad places, I'd much prefer that reason and judgment play a larger part instead of appealing to visceral reaction. Both can happen at once. Symbolism is important. Action is equally so.

Odd. No one from the Trump family?
You really don't need a forensics team to get to the bottom of this one. If you guys were the inventors of Facebook, you'd have invented Facebook.Cameron Winklevoss
