Look-In: Will Blythe wrote, “To Hate Like This Is To Be Happy Forever.” He said it for many. On both sides as best I can tell. Still, it has been a while since there was enough familiarity to breed the levels of contempt that once filled our hearts, the last truly despicable long-timer was Ted Cruz doppelgänger Grayson ‘tripper’ Allen I guess. Of course Kxyzmyzxi coached there for an eternity, never graying, foul and vampiric to the end. It was good of Coach Davis to preside at his funeral — twice. Driving that stake home in The Final Four was indeed a “Happy Forever” moment.

The latest out of derm are led by Colonel, err, Cooper Flagg. He’s the latest 4-monther and he’s very good. He’s kept his mouth shut, nor has he pushed, shoved, or tripped and he’ll be gone soon. Aussie Tyrese Proctor has actually been there three years and he’s dislikable enough-he chose the place after all-and he plays an all-around floor game (11.8 ppg). Kon Knueppel is passing through, a 6-7 wing with stoutness and an eye from the Arc.

A South Sudanese giant (7-2 with an arm span of 8-5) inhabits the paint. Khaman Maluach is a kid, born in ‘06, averaging 8.2 ppg, 6.5 rpg, and 1.1 blocks. In fact, he is one of the reasons that dook is the tallest team in college basketball. Sion James just rolled in from Tulane and he’s very effective all-around. Mason Gillis joined from Purdue too and is a quality bench man. Isaiah Evans is their heater off the pine. He’s a freshman and one of the few North Carolinians on the dook campus.

Frontcourt: Athleticism from Lubin and Washington. Claude and Withers are even physically - worthy. Brown has freshman numbers.

Wings: Ian Jackson and Drake Powell bring positivity and motivation. Tyson joins in that drive.

Guards: Cadeau is subdued while R.J. Davis soars. Trimble is a ball of good energy.

Overall: This is R.J.’s Adios. He will become the #1 in Games-Played-For-Carolina today. He has sweated and bled for UNC for Five Years, a run made possible by pandemic. His accolades and records are mountainous. He is 6-4 versus dook and served as a pallbearer at both of Klyzxmyplxi’s funerals. Ty Claude and Jae’Lyn Withers, both Tar Heels born (Goldsboro & Charlotte) are also playing their final Dean E. Smith Center games.

Tough, tough, tough game. The derm dookies are nationally #2 - Carolina on The Bubble. The biorhythms do not favor Carolina: Flagg, Knueppel, and James look too strong today. A path to victory could open up by way of the high ‘want to’ quotients of Trimble, Claude, Tyson, Powell, and Jackson. And a Super R.J. Everybody’s betting on dook by 11.5. The numbers here show a Tar Heel deficit. Heart says it is close as the dickens. One to two points. Anything can happen. Here’s to Happiness.

About the Blood (written last February 16, 2024)

Since February 5, 1992 and the Bloody Montross Game, a 75-73 home Carolina Victory over a Laettner/Hurley #1 ranked and undefeated dook team - many in The Tar Heel Nation have been on the look-out for blood. Indeed, metaphors abound as do real world examples for how we, and our hero-warriors in sky blue, spill our ALL over the Truly Beautiful Game as played in the Spirit of The GOAT, Coach Smith. This bundle of thoughts here, by the way, shall necessarily be partisan, and Sporty too, so turn away if either of those things bother you. .

The Bloody Montross game saw a first half in which Big Grits, then but an unwieldy sophomore giant yet to earn that moniker, bleed from the back of his crew-cut head - and be knitted back together with 6 stitches, only to return to bleed yet again from a face slash just beneath his left eye. He also scored 12 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, blocked 4 shots and greatly frustrated that boil of a blue devil, Laettner, and his twinish tower, the spongy Cherokee Parks. The win was sublime and over one of the most chock-full of hateables squads to ever come out of Buck Duke’s Fake Gothic Misplaced Preppie Colony.

And since that halcyon day there has been a blood watch. In the 30+ years since it has been unscientifically noted that if a Tar Heel bleeds then the chances of winning are greatly enhanced. With the Bloody Montross game always close to heart and mind the years passed and the battles were won and lost until a decade later when the Foreigners ventured the 8 miles to The Southern Part of Heaven, they - ranked #10 in the nation - to take on a struggling 15-14 Heel team in the final regular season match. The year before had been the 8-20 debacle. Freshmen and Sophomores - names then new to us but today much remembered - May, Felton, McCants, Sanders, Noel, Manuel, Scott, and Jawad Williams made up the heart of that mercurial team. The game was fraught and violence stalked the sidelines. Raymond Felton shed his blood that day and the underdog Heels prevailed 82-79.

In the years since, a litany of our faithful have opened their veins for Carolina. Of course no one should ever forget the shameful hit on Hansbrough ordered by Coach Rat in the waning minutes of an 86-72 Tar Heel rout (and sweep) of dook on March 3, 2007 that resulted in bright, bright red on a home white jersey #50 - a move that, for many, pushed the long-held rivalry into a surreal place beyond sports. And there it has stayed.

Among those who have shed their red for Carolina are Luke Maye, Cole Anthony, Garrison Brooks, Marcus Paige, J.P. Tokoto, and Justin Jackson (twice!). Most recently a blow to the face against dook left Armando Bacot with a mouthful of blood. Of course, R.J. Davis also received a nice bloody shiner in that same win over dook. And all that scarlet spilled always accompanied a win. The sweat of George Lynch is nigh sacred and a mark of defensive distinction almost always tied to successful outcomes - and as Tar Heels educated in The Carolina Way we appreciate that sacrifice, encourage it, and applaud it. Blood too has been a mark of distinction - and will likely continue to be - of the all-out team play - from each according to the need of the team - that is family.

I want to see them attack the paint and try to draw contact, pressure them on the perimeter, make them feel you early and be the more aggressive team on both ends. I don’t want to see them casting threes without first establishing some aggression, and scoring on drives or getting to the line.

If that doesn’t happen and they get punched in the mouth first, it could be a long night of frustrating catch-up ball, or worse.

But I think HD will have them spitting fire before they even hit the court, ready to throw that first punch.

If our Heels can win this game, they're in the tournament. If not, I think we have to win at least one or two in the ACC tourney.

As some of you know, my alma mater is SEC school, despite growing up in NC as Tar Heel fan. I never thought SEC basketball would be this good. It was a football conference. Similarly, I never thought I would see ACC basketball this bad.
